Cast Ability On Self

Yet another question on abilities due to my severe lack of skill with them: :P
How do you make it so that a unit can cast an ability on itself without having to click the target thing? I tried a bunch of things in the unit editor but nothing worked. FYI, the ability I'm working with is based off of Invisibility.

I too, am in the same boat as you in the sense that I'm not too good at this "tech" thing. Man i got the ideas, but i struggle trying to put them down..... but i persevere.

To (hopefully) answer ur question..... so you will feel loved.... (i know your lurking back there..... fustrated..... and feeling......... alone.....)

ANYWAY!!!

i think basically the problem is that the abilities also posess 'predetermined' data. For example: Death Pact the undead ability, can only be cast on undead and Life Drain can only be cast on enemy targets....

No matter what you click in the targets allowed buttons, the predetermined data remains the same

So you have a couple of choices
1) be content with casting the ability on your self
2) work the ability off another similarily based one..... wind walk comes to mind. (brb checking the WE)...............................................

ok you could do it off wind walk.. if you want to be able to turn it off you can find the appropriate tick box in the

GAMEPLAY CONSTANTS: gameplay-can deactivate wind walk
if its for units simply uncheck the 'is hero ability' in abilites stats

you could also base it on the item ability: Item invisisibility (lesser or greater)
simply uncheck the 'is item ability)

these are the only two ways i can think of..... but, there are others out here that know more than i do....... (thats not hard)

I hope this helps

*note* if not wanting windwalks abilites jsut put 0 for all it stats, but if thats the case u may as well use item invis'

I know it works, but I'd like to point out that SOME abilities (maybe just Channel) let you change their targeting data to self. You can try to change the buff to invisibility or something perhaps then...or activate it via trigger. Just note for abilities in the future that you might not be able to base on something.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!! YIPPEEEEE.... yay i actually answered something... Woot

thats a good point that Rinpun brought up though.

I have only just learnt the severely limited options that basing an ability off another present. Thx to Rinpun i believe i may be able to achieve some of my ideas........

No problem. Thanks for answering a question though. The more helpers the better.

just somethin i thought i'd point out on this, when ever you have an ability that needs a target but you want it to just effect the caster with out having to target it, use any ability that doesnt need a target and make a trigger that creates a dummy unit that casts the effect you want on the casting unit.

i did this with my Soul Tamer hero that i was going to submit to the last stand map, i wanted it to cast inner fire on itself with out targetting itself so i made an ability that summoned a unit and ordered the summoned unit to cast inner fire on the hero and then removed the summoned unit. so when i play with it i just click on the icon and inner fire is cast on the hero.

and also, i want to make an ability that i can cast on myself with out targetting myself and the only abilities i can think of that dont require a target are wind walk and feral spirit. i cant think right now, i know there are more. what other abilities are there that dont need a target?

avatar, roar, bear form (and druid form), crow form, animate dead, all the summon spells, berserk... the list goes on.

.

just umm use the channel ability and muck around with its stats in object editor... since this ability's target is changeable to instant, unit or area etc. where instant is self cast pretty much. but when cast, the ability does absolutely nth so u have to use a trigger to summon a unit and make it cast it on ur unit. a good way to make it pro looking is to hide the summoned unit, add that ability to the unit (or have the unit already have that ability), cast it on ur casting hero (preferably the ability has 0 mana cost and 0 cast rate), and then put a timer on the unit or remove the summoned unit using triggers.

oh and i find it easier to use some neutral critter to do the job such as sheep, rabbit or chicken etc.

u can also change its scaling so that it would be barely noticeable to users when summoned out of nowhere.. but i find using a trigger to hide the unit is much more efficient

yea avatar, i didnt really want to mess with that one im pretty sure it would automatically dispell the unit that uses it. roar i could use, bear and druid form change units so that might mess things up but it would probably work. doesnt animate dead and ressurection only work if there are corpses nearby? i know some of the summon spells dont need a target, but some have you target the terrain i couldnt remember which ones had no target. berserk works too.

i dont like channel.

i always use a neutral passive shade with the ghost ability so you cant see it

How often does the Trending Content box refresh?
  • The Helper The Helper:
Also, in the last template there was a seperation between sticky threads and regular threads in the forum
  • Ghan Ghan:
Not sure. It's probably part of a cron job.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Hey Ghan, whatever cron job its part of its not running its been the same for days. If it does not work can we remove it?
  • The Helper The Helper:
    LOL! A tweak job!
  • The Helper The Helper:
this is the fix I get from that yeah this is hard to control. disabling bots is pretty much necessary as ai and other bots would push really old threads to the top. reduce weight of view count. disable guest view tracking if you really want to push active threads to the top. a bit of tinkering for a few days with the weights and other settings should get you a decent trending widget box.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I changed the settings a bit.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Narrowed it to 7 days for the half-life and set views to 0 weight.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I dont think Trending would work for this forum it would be better to just have the last 5 posts from anywhere
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably will have to give it some time to update.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I'm guessing it is not retroactive.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Next on the punch list: Update the server to Ubuntu 24.04.

One thing I have noticed and I dont know if it is by design but like 1 out of 3 times I come to the site the Anubis screen just hangs open, if I refresh it will go away but sometimes it hangs
  • Ghan Ghan:
    I've seen that as well.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Wow - the change in the stats are major. I kind of knew it was all bots but wow, to see the effect. Why the social media sites cant do something like this I have no idea.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably inflates their numbers so they look better to advertisers.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots
  • The Helper The Helper:
oh wow, i bet i can post x links now and do the webp pics now giggity
