CD drive not running

Hey,
Whenever I put a cd in the drive, it hums, blinks, spins, but never reads it. It started after I put the Diablo2x cd in and since I've been getting an error at startup saying something about EIDE controller running out of normal parameters and something about 0 drive. I get sent from there to windows and the drive doesnt read any cd. This has happend before and just went away after I put a cd in and took it out until it worked on the 2nd or 3rd try but it's not working now. Any advice would be helpful.

Sounds like your IDE controller is going out or your cable is not plugged in well. Test it by sticking another CD Rom on your computer and see if it works. Or take your CD Rom to another computer and test it. Either way that will tell you whether the controller is messed up. You should check for loose wires.

Well, I'm positive its not the cd; I've tried several and niether of them have worked. I should mention the IDE has happened before but it had no effect on the cd drive. It started happening when I began to play WarcraftIII, then went away a few months after I stopped. Same thing with Diablo2x. I hadn't played it for a few months, the windows startup message wasn't comming up, I put the cd in, didn't run, and the computer started displaying the message at startup again. Maybe you have some theories into the cause of this?...Why it would go away after a while, or why the game would cause this?...Virus perhaps? Again, any guess would be of help.

Hey I just registered under this name but refering back to the CD Rom issue: It started working again. I just restarted my computer with a random game's cd inside. When the windows loaded, all cds worked. Thanks for the help though.

If Warcraft III and Diablo II really are causing this problem, most likely it's due to the copy-protection software they use, which installs a driver that in some cases conflicts with motherboard chipset drivers., which in most cases includes the IDE drivers. The next time this happens and you can't solve it the usual way, I would suggest reinstalling or updating your motherboard chipset drivers.

I followed up on your suggestion and it's the first breakthrough I've had in all the years that this problem has existed! I'll update over the weekend; I'm pretty confident this is going to work (for once). It's the only thing that actually has made sense after all this time.
