There are people in this world who cannot afford medical treatments. And those with chronic illnesses generally need help from multiple other organizations to be able to live. For every individual to pay a small amount into the health insurance pot is much more affordable than raising great amounts of money for when you're really in a pinch.
I really want to see you when you're old and sick and can't wipe your own ass and can't afford some help, to at least keep your dignity.

Because it is not my problem. So what happens if I get old and decrepit and can't contribute to society, let alone take care of myself? That isn't YOUR problem, or anyone else's, it comes down to the fault of me for not having managed my affairs properly enough to take care of what I need to. And I don't think you know how much you're actually paying for it, because it's not a 'small pinch', but whatever.
