Thousands of products made from the skins of cats and dogs are being offered on China's largest retail website Taobao, sparking outrage among animal lovers, state media reported Tuesday.

Search results and sales records from Taobao showed the most popular items were trousers and hats made from dog fur, which is touted for its ability to ward off the cold, AFP found after searching the website.

One seller with the username "sjz2ys" boasted that all the cat skin products available in his online store were authentic, though he had only sold one item -- a waistcoat -- in the past month, the Shanghai Daily said.

Animal rights activists said dealers usually targeted stray animals, selling their skins to fur traders in the country's east and the meat to restaurants in the south.

I wonder, why is it okay for us to massacre crocodiles, elephants, trees, the World, and many other things, but according to them, it's not okay to kill dogs and cats for materials.

I mean, yeah, it's a bit gruesome, but it's the same deal as raccoon skin hats, bear skin coats, deer skin gloves, X skin Y's, etc etc.

No need to outrage. Simply agree to disagree.

Well, I know that those who have them as pets would view this situation differently. I probably would too if I had one. But what if people had bears and raccoons as pets (as some probably do)?

The situation would be a bit different then. Though, bears are a bit more dangerous and prone to violence than domesticated dogs and cats. However, dogs and cats were once as violent as bears were, they've just been domesticated and tamed.

I don't know. It's just that, there are always two sides to a store ;)

Scientifically I am OK with there skins being sold but emotionally I am torn since I have both of them as pets. I could see this being a bigger issue for other people.

The same goes for me, except I just don't have them as pets. My friend had cats, and I loved them.

I have dogs (well my parent's and I grew up with them), but we got them from the humane society, where they literally kill dogs who don't get adopted - just to prevent strays (this is in the U.S.) - so if the dogs are going to die anyways, (and they do, tons of them), why not use their remains? (it's not like they were going to get a burial or anything people..)

Mexico has crocodiles and alligators, we make boots/jackets/etc out of them, even dishes.

China has cats/dogs...see where I'm going with this?

i dont see a problem with clothes and other stuff made from dogs or cats. i got a dog, i got a cat too. (and i have to agree that cat got some realy soft fur, would be perfect for clothes)

as long as these animals die without unneeded suffering i have the same opinion about it as i have about the things we make out of cows or pigs or other animals.

I honestly don't see much wrong with this in comparison to other things. We wear other animals, it's what we do. What's the difference between wearing fox fur and dog? There was an argument not long ago about how it's not right to eat a race horse after it's retired. the way I see it, we ea meat, so why is it wrong to eat these kinds of animals?

Are you one of those so-called "Vegans" who don't use anything made from animals? I hope not, because you'd be a hypocrite and liar.

Me? @Sevion

If so, no I'm not a vegan or even a vegetarian!
I never said that even.

But this crap, I would never, ever, accept it.

So tell me, when you see someone walking around in a leather jacket, what do you do?

There are two things I find interesting about us as creatures. We are the only species on the planet that will wear another animals natural fur. We are also the only species that would find remorse in this.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
