A rural bridge under construction in northwest China partially collapsed only hours after its supports were removed amid claims that the builders had scrimped on materials, according to a newspaper report.

The stone bridge, about 20 metres long and six metres high, was designed to connect a highway and village in Danfeng county in Shaanxi provine and help villagers cross a river prone to flooding during heavy rains, the Chinese Business View reported.

Workers spent two months building the bridge, but part of it collapsed on Monday only two hours after supports were taken away.

Villagers suspect that builders used low quality stone and too little cement, the report said.

One villager was quoted as saying he had raised questions over the quality of materials, but builders had shrugged his complaints off.
