Creative Writing, Room 220
220 is my English class :D

What is this about?

I Pineapple will teach you all about Creative Writing. From Short Stories to Poetry focusing more on the stories. I will help you build better plots with characters that are unique and settings that don't feel generic. For poetry I will teach you things to improve and get a good flow going.

How will this course help me specifically?

This course will bend and flex to your specific needs with individual assignments designed to improve your style further or get you to learn more styles so that you are not locked down to the same stories over and over.

I want to join!

You want in eh? Well then post "I'm in!" Along with that you have to post what you usually write Poetry/Short Stories. Then What genre you write your stories and poems in Tragic/Fantasy/Mystery/Romance/Comedy/Historic/etc... If you don't write poems or shorts stories then put N/A

If you want to specify a style of poetry too then you can. Ex. Haiku/Limericks/Rhyming Couplets.

While I think writing should be a personal thing, I love writing and I love to see you teaching it, so sure I'm in.

I usually write short stories but from time to time poetry.
I write more or less all genres.

lesson 1

Lesson 1

Writers Zone

Everyone has it, the place that you write your poetry or stories. We all have our Writers Zone. Make sure that your zone isn’t surrounded by distractions. Often it happens, even to myself, I get distracted by something and then when I get back to writing I will have to read what I just wrote so I know where to continue from. This isn’t as bad of a problem if you are able to remain focused but you still need to make sure everything is well organized.

Do you feel you work better with music? Then make sure there is music around you but also make sure that its songs you want to listen to. If you are playing music which you constantly need to change then it’s not very useful.

Can you see those knick-knacks you thought would look good beside your computer/paper? They do look good, but they don’t help. I know from experience. I had a little bear in a Canadian sweater beside my monitor. I thought it would be harmless but I found my self fascinated with it while I’m trying to write.

There is one exemption to the knick-knack rule is when it is something inspirational. I don’t have anything such as this but maybe you have a picture of a person who you admire or look up to, maybe it is a sentimental gift that your friend gave you. If it gives you a drive to keep working and do your best then you should definitely hang onto it.

Telephone? Forget about it. You don’t need that ringing constantly while you try to write. In some cases the phone doesn’t ring as much as others. I know for me it doesn’t ring much but when my sister was in high school the phone would be ringing every 30 minutes! Besides if it’s for you someone will come tell you right?

Pets are so cute. I have a little kitten and an older cat. Well, they live in my room, which is where my computer is. I know this is not just me because all my friends complain about this with there cats. They are drawn to the keyboard. When I’m typing they love to walk on it, or they will jump on my monitor, attack my hands, and even attack my mouse! If I’m writing on paper they eat my pencil or lay on my paper, anything for attention. Keep pets a safe distance from where you write.

Follow these and you can hopefully keep yourself with a nice area you enjoy to sit down and write to get away from the world and enter a world which you create. Of course these are guidelines, you don’t need to follow them exactly, or can ignore some, as long as the area you are working in is to your satisfaction. I focused mainly on things I notice and what people tell me about them selves.

Dos and Don’ts

Do: Allow your creativity to flow. If you have an idea that you need to add something into your writing then do so. A piece of writing everyone loves that the author doesn’t is a failed piece. Remember that sentimental quote your grandfather said? You can put it into the writing which will make it better to yourself. Even if other people don’t understand what its there for you will.

Don’t: Force yourself to write. If you are not in the mood to write then don’t force it. I have done it and I ended up with crap. Now, when there is a deadline to meet I understand you have to force yourself but don’t just sit down and force it all onto yourself. Did it slowly and over time gives you the chance to gather your thoughts and come up with ideas.

Do: Read, lots and lots of reading. It will help you learn more words and it will help with spelling and grammar. It shows you what is already on the table not to mention that it shows you what is common in novels.

Don’t: Copy a idea from another poet/author. Don’t even copy scenes you saw in a movie. If I am reading your book and then the main character finds a book with all types of spells inside of it that shouldn’t be only to find out that it belonged to one of the last people they expected I will be yelling Harry potter. Equally if you write a poem about a man who’s wife died and then he heard a noise at his door only to be confronted with a bird ill be yelling The Raven! I read to get a new story unless it’s a continuation.

Do: Write your book like it is meant to be read. I know lots of people who have written a book then I said to them. “Well, there to too much action.” Then they just say “Ya, well it would make an amazing movie!” If that’s what you want write a screen play. Movies might not need a good plot *cough*300*cough* but books do, that is what brings us to them.

Don’t: Become a description Nazi. If you start doing details such as the colour of the bark on that tree or the character weighing 210 pounds and 5 feet and 11 inches, it leaves nothing to the imagination. The same applies for poems. Poems are great if it gets you thinking if you make your poems pages long describing every little thing then there isn’t much for the reader to do. Poems should also use more of a vague dialog, and metaphors. Instead of
“He sat waiting for the door to ring, but there was nothing not a thing.”
You can do something like…
“Perched upon his door steps sight, all through day and all through night,”
The thing to remember is the type of poetry you write determines the type of writing used, more on that in Lesson 3.

Getting Your Flow Going

Your flow is the moment where things come strait to you. This is the moment where the right words are popping onto your brain or the ideas are bursting through the doors. The main factor to your flow if your enthusiasm. If you got the mode set that you want to write and write but you just can’t, then your brain is going to start getting ideas for the plot or for the characters. Best thinking in the Shower? Naw, only if you want to write.

If you got a momentum going where you are actually into your writing, you are envisioning the events or the mood then you get the best choice of words popping up in your mind. This goes hand in had with reading. That will add words to your vocabulary whether it is consciously or subconsciously. There are words that I know how to use them that I don’t remember how I learned it.

Still this isn’t to say you cannot get a helping hand from friends who love to write and have ideas or from your trusty thesaurus or rhyming thesaurus. Even if your friends are suggesting giant robotic flying bananas from Pluto (which is not a planet), you may be thinking that they are being an idiot but it still gets you thinking bringing you into the flow.

  • Varine Varine:
I ordered like five blocks for 15 dollars. They're just little aluminum blocks with holes drilled into them
  • Varine Varine:
They are pretty much disposable. I have shitty nozzles though, and I don't think these were designed for how hot I've run them
  • Varine Varine:
I tried to extract it but the thing is pretty stuck. Idk what else I can use this for
  • Varine Varine:
I'll throw it into my scrap stuff box, I'm sure can be used for something
  • Varine Varine:
I have spare parts for like, everything BUT that block lol. Oh well, I'll print this shit next week I guess. Hopefully it fits
  • Varine Varine:
I see that, despite your insistence to the contrary, we are becoming a recipe website
  • Varine Varine:
    Which is unique I guess.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement
  • The Helper The Helper:
So what it really is me trying to implement some kind of better site navigation not change the whole theme of the site
  • Varine Varine:
How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air
