Computer Standby Problems

I just don't get it...because it was working absolutely perfect last week damnit.

Ok guys, here I am with a problem with Windows...big surprise eh? Hehehe. Anyways, here's my problem. My computer never wants to come out of standby anymore, and I don't have a clue why. I hit the power button to bring it out of standby, the light goes green but nothing shows up on the screen. If I hit a few buttons on my keyboard, it'll sometimes come up...but I shouldn't have to do this!

Anyone know what could possibly be going on? I'm running Win98 and I haven't installed any new hardware recently.

I've had troubles with stand-by myself. When I tried to "wake it up", I would come back to Windows but the mouse no longer responded. Naturally I had to reboot.

I've heard nothing but bad things about stand-by mode. I hear it's hard on your hard-disks. I suggest you don't use it at all.

The only thing I put in standby is my monitor after 30 mins.

This problem occurs due to like a million reasons, both hardware and software related. To find your specific reason, search for w98standby on www.microsoft.com

I had this problem earlier because my motherboard didn't accept windows standby, and windows didn't accept that the bios ordered a standby, so I never used it before. Now, my new motherboard supports w98 standby, but I never use it, since it's bad for the harddrives (as said above)

NoNameRequired our Paranoid Moderator is right .
it is rather bad for the harddrive and i recommend not to use it all !

Hmm, why's it bad for the hard drive? Just a simple answer will do. I don't need a drawn out explanation. :D

Well, when you turn into stand-by mode, power is taken away from the hard-disk(s) to shut it off. When you come out of Stand-By mode, a lot of power is quickly sent to the hard-disk(s) to turn it on again. One of the worst thing you could do to an electronic is turn it on and off. It's when you turn any electronic on a lot of power is sent to it and that is damaging.

there isn't really any benefit to standby mode--- the amount of electricity you are saving (if any) isn't worth it

just have it turn off the monitor-- that's what uses the most power

yah, the same thing happens to my computer. i dont have a power of on/off button. instead, the idiotic button is used 4 standby, so if my comp crashes or anytthing, i cant turn it off by force, i have to restart it instead. Can some1 tell me how to configure that button to be used to turn off the computer instead of standby mode?

hold the power button down for about 4 or 5 seconds... that's how they work

there should be a setting in BIOS or in Windows somewhere to decide how that button reacts to being pressed

everytime your hd goes into doze mode it needs to rev up when you activate it .

let's assume your HD is a car.
you would drive 150 mph and then slow down to allmost an halt and then you rev up to 150 mph again .
if you do that with your car all the time you gonna have a little problem in the end .
best to leave them running on a constant speed.

Hrmmm, thanks guys. I guess from now on just turning off my monitor will be the best thing to do...or I could just shut it down hehe.

Hey CrusherEAGLE. If you're using Win98, and you want to change your power button settings, just go to your "Power Management Properties" and hit the "Advanced" tab. You should see an option to set what the power button does when you hit it...either Standby or Shutdown. You should have it on shutdown just because, if you comp locks-up you have a 'last resort' way out. This is experience talking.
Once my comp locked up and my power button was set to standby. I had to unplug the damn thing. Talk about suck.

That was a long time ago though...lol.

If you need to shut down and your button is set to Standby, just hold it in for 6 seconds and it'll power down.

Mine's set for shutdown and I still have to hold it for 4-5 sec.

Argh :pissed: I wish I was Bill Gates,

My tip of the day:

If Windows is set for shut down, and it still goes to standby, check the bios for power down settings, since they often override the windows settings.

I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best

I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.

It's just hard to move and train people unnecessarily right now. And also the line fucking sucks, it's not any more fun. This is turn and burn so I have the bankroll, and everyone suffers for it

I think it's gonna be a good fall and winter though. We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it
  • Varine Varine:
They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know

I recently had an experience with a waiter that really brought down @Varine's point about them being in sales. The first waiter just asked "anything else? deserts?" and when the table shook their head said "ok" and left. Then the other waiter came in and started going off describing the deserts and you could see the heads turning, and they finally got a bunch of deserts
  • jonas jonas:
makes sense if you consider that the tip is basically a commission on sales

That's an arbitrary number. It could be whatever you want, really. Though one wonders what the use case is for uploading giant files to a forum these days.

I should have asked elsewhere but i wanted vsnes to see he is trying to upload a pic no big deal it can stay where it is.
