I say if people can't make a hero in 3+ weeks, there just isn't interest in the competition, and it should instead be canceled

I'm pretty much done, but another week would help in finding bugs and stuff.

You can't just assume. School schedule could be tight, which is exactly my case. Else, it could be test/exam period.

like I said - there isn't interest

if there was - you would have made time, plain and simple, exams are no excuse - I just got out of college, and there is plenty of time to make time for what you want, or have interest in, bar none - people just choose to use their time for other things, which brings us back to the lack of interest

I see what you mean, but mapping can actually take quite a few hours (I am sure you know :p) In theory, I guess you could expect a Hero Contest to take four times a normal spell contest. What I want to say is; even if you are right there are things ppl priors before this contest (I have several), it still doesn't mean there won't be some submissions if the time is extended

Well, since it's a hero contest, I guess taking time and thinking about skills that actually fit together in a theme, which are balanced, unique and interesting takes alot of time.

I have 2 abilities ready up to now.
If you're desperate to see them, I can post a teaser.

Lack of interest? Lack of creative Ideas.

I think the major problem was the theme---heroes? Really?

I lost interest in my spells because it was ... stupid.

Heroes are the core for everything. If you're not willing to do the extra work, then you aren't participating, easy as that. I guess it'll be easy rep for the 3-5 contest submissions.

I think hero contests are really awesome. It requires creativity and sense of the game and not only coding skills (although being able to code the combos you want are key).

Definitely want more hero contests. Might be an idea to give a required theme to the hero, though (with risk of everyone making the same kind of hero)

I don't think you understand me. Creating a hero is a no brainer, as a hero is the main type of unit that uses spells such as those made in contests. I'm talking about the theme of making "heroes".

Personal opinions. I figured that people might like an opportunity to express themselves in the form of a hero.

Okay, yes, The submission will be extended one week. You're right.

infinite extension!!!

I see what you mean, but mapping can actually take quite a few hours (I am sure you know ) In theory, I guess you could expect a Hero Contest to take four times a normal spell contest. What I want to say is; even if you are right there are things ppl priors before this contest (I have several), it still doesn't mean there won't be some submissions if the time is extended

I am glad someone does. People use this excuse all the time, school, work, etc (there are very few people I have ever met that legitimately have no time, between school/work/kids/etc., but generally people have plenty of free time to do with as they so choose). Its bull shit. My mom says all the time she has no time for anything, but she sits in front of the tv every night for 2 hours after work watching the same shows. That is at least 10 hours a week wasted. Its all about priorities, and WC3 is not high on the list.

Would I have more time to make a hero if I wasn't at the gym/playing sports everyday for 3 hours? Yes, but I choose to do otherwise. You don't here me saying I don't have time because I am busy with other things do you? No, its a given, because I didn't have time to finish my hero. Looks like I will now.

Well, since it's a hero contest, I guess taking time and thinking about skills that actually fit together in a theme, which are balanced, unique and interesting takes alot of time.

Think about when you were big into WC3 map making, how long did it legitimately take you to map out a hero and make him...a week, two at the most? I think 3.5 is more then enough, given enough interest that is.

Lets say you are strapped for ideas. It takes you several days to come up with one, with a few abilities. Throw on top of that an hour of object editing/spell, followed by 2 hours of coding/spell, and 3 hours of bug testing. Assuming you can spare 2 hours every other day, its still done in under three weeks, and that is being generous.

it still doesn't mean there won't be some submissions if the time is extended

what makes you think your priorities will change anytime soon?

I think the major problem was the theme---heroes? Really?

the real problem is compounded by the fact that there is no defined hero theme, not even a map type. The contest is so open that its actually impeding creativity in that you have no direction to start with.

I'm talking about the theme of making "heroes".

could just go like me, and throw neat spells together on a hero. thats what ends up usually winning anyways.

Quote by our friend above: infinite extension!!!

Why? You're not creative to make a hero with synergy? Does it have to be a theme?

Define your theme the map style and create a hero. About heroes you can make survival, duel, dota style. Then NeuroToxin will see if your idea fits your theme and map style, see the synergy of spells and the whole concept. Deal it, its not difficult.

No, not Infinite Extension. I also see your point, I realize that there are excuses, but the fact of the matter is, some people just need more time. People may have been somewhere else on vacation until last week, and they wanted to join, either way, it makes sense.

I agree on the opinion that this "theme" is so HUGELY open, that it actually makes it more difficult to come up with an idea. As Day[9] says in his Funday Monday shows; constrictions make you think and can even make it easier for you. (Oh, and there is even another NURD thing I priors nearly as high as mapping, watching silly Starcraft II casts. And that's apart from sports, music, and school work, which I definitely put in front of my computer time) Now what emjlr3 said about putting other things first and saying "I haven't had time" is SO true not just for wc3 mapping, that is used for so many different things irl that I cannot count them. If someone doesn't get any better at singing and codes Warcraft several hours a day, they won't be playing in my band  although I do not feel irritated at the moment, as our friend emjlr3 seems to be.

However, I do not take back that I really like hero contests ;) and I HAVE submitted!

Have to agree with Hulky here. It's been a trend. Common.

People give excuses in submission.
People give excuses in taking time to grade.
Common.
If you want something, you get it done.
Then again, I procrastinate as well...

So far, I only noticed Romek gave 'excuses' but redeemed them with awesome effort.
I hope there will be a good grading proess in this one.
Good luck.

I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
