Thailand authorities banned best-selling videogame Grand Theft Auto 4 Tuesday, following an outrage sparked by the brutal carjacking and murder of a taxicab driver. Reports indicate that the perpetrator, 19-year-old Polwat Chinno, cited an intention to act out the game’s carjacking scenes.
The official reason for the ban is the game’s “obscene” content, and shops found selling the game could face a 6,000 baht ($180 USD) fine or three years imprisonment if they are caught. Online retailers face stiffer penalties: 100,000 baht ($3,000 USD) and up to five years imprisonment.
