Crash to Desktop Problems

Ok, put me on the list of people having this problems. I have a legit copy of the game. I've tried everything I could in these forums so far.

Athlon 1800+
Giga-Byte GA-7DX mb
256 Megs DDR PC 2100 RAM.
SB Live! X-Gamer
GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64 Meg DDR

1. Reinstalled everything from scratch (including the O/S)
2. Tried the video refresh fix
3. Tried all resolutions/refresh rates.
4. Tried both disk booting
5. All drives and updates are done on system
6. Tried deleting the movies
7. Tried throwing the pc out the door


If anyone comes up with something new I'd appreciate them posting it. This has got to be one of the most annoying things there is.

Yes, I've installed the chipset driver updates as well as made sure that i'm on ver 5.33 of the AGP miniport.

Still..no go.

Hi all,

I may have figured out everyone's problems (hopefully).
NOTE: I'm only using the Demo.
Here's what i did.

1) installed the new NVIDIA driver (not from your video card manufacturer)
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

I also did this (but i suspect had no effect)
1) installed VIA 4-in-1 driver (chipset update for motherboard)
2) installed DirectX 9.0a
3) installed Demo patch.

Not only did the game run....but i was also able to crank up the video details far above what they were before.


I'm running in Win2000.
AMD 1Gig
AOPEN PA256 Geforce2 MX

I've tried that also.

I used 4 different versions of the detonator drivers to no avail.

You didn't mention your OS. In a normal XP install (no SP1) don't try refresh rate fixes as the game will usually crash to the desktop (unless you've altered/unlocked your video con file) after the opening screens. And if by some chance you have Total Recorder, it's sound settings (put them back to your sound card's) will also crash it to the desktop.

If you do get it running you will have to up your ram to at least 512.

I'm running XP Pro. sorry...

I tried it from a fresh (formatted and reinstalled) install of XP. Then with SP1.

I also recently tried it with all my sound removed including the card.

Still no go. Also, I don't have total recorder.

and 20gigs of space left...

Same problem sadly, but with a twist.
map loaded on a server. between 20 seconds and 3 min it dumps.
Tried older drivers, newer drivers, reinstalling, tweeks, etc..
Just started 2 days ago.
I changed nothing in the machine.

So far I have it down to the NIC card, or a card/router conflict. Since the designers didnt believe in eror messages, I've looked elsewhere. There has been a corrupt data error from the network each time it has dumped. Still working on it.

I'd suggest getting to know your computers. Find out what motherboard you have, then what chipset it uses. The find your video card name and maker, get the latest drivers for that. Chipset drivers. Service Packs from microsoft for your operating system. DirectX latest version. Driver updates for *all* your hardware.

Once thats done, goto start>run>control.exe
Adjust your display settings to everything default, if you cant find default just put the settings low. Except for color, keep that in 32Bit or True Color. Make sure you have the system requirements. And when all else fails try that refresh fix. If that doesnt work, I'd suggest stopping playing around and just a get a crack, and drop the con file from the CD into BF1942's directory. Replace any files taht pertain to configuration from with the original ones from the CD. Someone wanna post with the names that BF uses when it starts? That should keep ya in operation.
