creeps, creep, creeps

So, yeah, I was reading this thread:

where they were discussing "Random level x creep unit-type"

My point of confusion regarding this topic is, what makes a creep a creep ? Is there a special flag that has to be set somewhere ? Or are creeps just all units listed under the "Neutral Hostile" player in the editor ? Can custom units be counted as creeps ?

under 'stats - race' in the unit editor you can set the unit's race to creeps
