custom ability and upgrade question

i remember in enfo's team survival 1.09 there was a peon hero, named enfo. he could build towers and upgrade their damage and armor. but it was bugged so when you upgraded the armor it actually did the damage, and when you upgraded the weapons it didn't do anything.

my question is, how can i make an ability upgrade a unit/building's damage/armor? it would have to be a passive ability, with x amount of levels. i would look at the map, but it's protected so i have no way of learning how to do this. thanks in advance!
 
Heres one simple solution, create a dummy unit... one with locust and all and that upgrade that upgrades the building.. give the building that upgrade on the upgrade list... and when the hero learns a skill make a trigger make that dummy unit upgrade that specific upgrade...(Also i recommend keeping the dummy unit alive and all by placing him with no pathing and collision, and having him in some corner.)

Passive as in it automatically upgrades...?
Anyways you can give your peon an upgrade and the upgrade can have a 0 upgrade time so it would pretty much be an ability :cool:
 
what i mean by passive is that it's like critical strike, you can't push the button. once you "learn" the ability, it upgrades the buildings damage or armor. what i can't figure out, is how to make an ability like that cause an upgrade to happen. is there any way to do it outside of triggers? does anyone know how they did it with enfo's?

one thing also, buildings have a "techtree - researches available" flag, where you can choose upgrades. but it seems to be a building only flag. is there a way to do something similar with a unit? i'm trying to make a builder hero, who instead of getting abilities like normal heroes gets upgrades for the towers he builds. damage and armor for now.
 
Give him auras that only affect his units. Base them off of War Drums Aura and Devotion Aura.
 
If you were to do that, you would need very long range auras, and it would be annoying and maybe laggy, your better off sticking to upgrades i think..

Yes, scroll down and there is something like Upgrades-Available upgrades on any unit and it is even on buildings...
 
correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't "techtree - upgrades used" for what upgrades affect that unit and not upgrades they can research? i'm trying to make it an ability that you must learn for x amount of levels. so i'd click on the abilities button, learn "upgrade weapons (level 1)" and it would show an icon in the button menu saying "weapons (level 1)" and would upgrade the weapons for the buildings specified.
 
ya, it is.. sorry, i got confused.. its late around here... and to do that you only need this simple trigger:

Event:
A unit learns an abillity
Condition:
Abillity is equal to (Your abillity)
Actions:
Order (DUMMY UNIT) to upgrade (YOUR UPGRADE HERE)
 
Oh yeah i was probrably wrong, units must not be able to research upgrades.. yes upgrades used is when they actual use the upgrade not research it.. sorry

For the passive thing use something like moon glaive, the ability does nothing its just to show u you have it researched...
 
You can have the upgrade already researched and you could probably make the upgrade require an abillity, but thats a whole other method.. and im not sure if it would work..
 
i made a building with locust ability and for researches available i put my upgrade up. i made a trigger like so:

event:
until - builder 0001 <gen> learns a skill

condition:
learned hero skill equal to tower weapons

action:
unit - order builder upgrades 0003 <gen> to research tower weapons

i used black gunpowder as a base for the upgrade. the tower has artillery as a weapon type, and so does the upgrade. nothing happens. is there an easier way?
 
You don't need a building to do the actual research.
Just set the level by hand:
Player - Set the current research level of Black Gunpowder to ((Current research level of Black Gunpowder for (Owner of (Triggering unit))) + 1) for (Owner of (Triggering unit))

one more question: how can i make it so the towers i build share xp with the player who owns them?
 
Only Heroes can get experience.

If your problem is that your Heroes don't get any when a building does the kill,
there's a Gameplay Constant that helps: Hero XP - Building kills grant XP, to be set to "true".

If your problem is something else, well, let us know... :)

yeah, i registered just now. was in the middle of working on the map last night, testing it, and refreshing the page every 5 minutes to see a reply. i'm glad i found this forum. :)

actually, everything works great, but i am running across a slight problem in getting it to work perfectly. here is my trigger:

    Unit - A unit owned by Player 1 (Red) Learns a skill
    Unit - A unit owned by Player 2 (Blue) Learns a skill
    Unit - A unit owned by Player 3 (Teal) Learns a skill
    Unit - A unit owned by Player 4 (Purple) Learns a skill

    (Learned Hero Skill) Equal to Basic Tower Defense 
Actions
    Player - Set the current research level of Tower Defense  to (TowerDef + 1) for (Owner of (Learning Hero))

towerdef is initialised as 0, but no matter how many levels i gain for the skill, it will only upgrade once. how can this be fixed? i'd like to upgrade as many times as possible.
 
I guess that TowerDef is never changed...

Actually, there's a reason why my example up here said:
((Current research level of Black Gunpowder for (Owner of (Triggering unit))) + 1)

So, your line, so I guess, should be:
Player - Set the current research level of Tower Defense to ((Current research level of Tower Defense for (Owner of (Learning Hero))) + 1) for (Owner of (Learning Hero))
 
thanks again, sir. the first time i saw your code i couldn't find a way to do it like that, but upon second look i did find it. i'm trying to get an ability that triggers an upgrade in much the same way, except that it unlocks building options. would there be an easier way to do it other than making a dummy unit to be the building's prereq? thanks again.

    It's actually remarkably easy to make mayonnaise though. Fun fact, it USED to kind of be a French mother sauce. I believe that Careme considered it one, it may have been aioli but that has also built a different meaning than it used to. An aioli is just mayonnaise I mixed with other shit typically, I didn't start it don't come at me

    It's very hard to do it on a large scale though

    Depending on how you pour the oil the consistency can vary wildly, but that's true for most emulsions. I can only make about two quarts at a time with my robo coup, and if I have to make several in series because I forgot to order it becomes really obvious even when I do it. We have to wait and mix them all together to make sure we have the same thing.
