Custom Units

I created a custom hero and want to be able to use it without having to place it on the map. Is it possible to make it so that you can buy the hero just like you would any regular unit or hero?

Yes... once you've created your Hero, you simply need to go to the appropriate Alter and add him in as a trainable choice

For example.. Under the Altar of Storms.. you should see 4 types of Hero's in there.. just click on that and click Add Unit.. then browse to your Custom Hero.

Goto Object Editor (F6 key).
Hold down Ctrl and F keys. Type in Altar of Storms
Goto right side window on screen and find Techtree - Units Trained
Dbl click on Blademaster (to right of techtree)
Click Add Unit
Choose your desired Hero Unit (find under appropriate race, etc.). OK out of there.
Goto Terrain Editor (F3 key). Type U
Select Altar of Storms from Unit Palette>Orc>Melee>Buildings. Place on Map.
Dbl click on placed Altar. Select correct race (General>Player.
Save (Ctrl + S) your map.

The information mentioned above is valuble, assuming you want the building to train the unit. Meaning it takes a certain ammount of time before it is actually made. If you want the unit to be sold then it is a different story. Sold, means the unit will appear instantly after you click on the button to buy it. In which case you would go to Units Sold, not Units Trained.
