D&D - Online Campaign: Recruitment

Meh, I'm not a big fan of voice chat, really. I have a mic though, if everyone else has one.

As for how the game works, basically, you make a character, using the rules that D&D gives you, and then you do whatever the hell you want with that character. Usually the game follows some sort of ploy laid down by the DM, but I usually run fairly open campaigns, with very little rail-roading. There might be obvious choices I expect you to use, but if you don't, I can adapt to what you want to do. I hope, in the end, that most of the story is built by the players, and I just give you the setting to do it in.

I think using 3.5 is going to be the best option, since it has more variety in classes and such, and since more people know it, and likely have books. If you don't have a book, go to Myth-Weavers. They have all of the rules that have been approved for open-source, which should be enough for now, at least. I believe it has most of the players handbook, which is all you need as a player. If you want to know something that isn't there, just ask me and I'll look it up.

Don't worry too overly much about combat. Since we're doing this online, combat would likely be a bit slow already, and complex fights would be hard without a grid. (which we won't use, unless there is a really big need, or we find one that's easy to use online or something) Just build your character so that he can do what you want him to do in a roleplay situation, and combat usefulness can be derived from those tools. This isn't a video-game character you're making, it's a real person, so they don't have to be super-streamlined for combat. (Something my normal players have yet to grasp)

Edit: Forgot to mention, but that site also has a great online character sheet, which we will likely use for this campaign. To use it, just register on the site. (it's free, no worries) Everyone will need a character sheet eventually, at least by the first fight.

Alright, well I have the original board game, I can help explaining and such, and then perhaps either DM or be a character that anyone wants me to be, I want to see how this goes, because I play with friends every once in a while, very rarely but we had a game going.

Huh, interest in this seems to be going in weekly cycles. If you want to start reading up on rules and don't want to buy the books (picking up the Player's Handbook would be helpful, but you don't need to do it if you're unsure) then visit Mythweavers. Not only do they have a nice online character sheet you can use, but they have most of the rules that were released to be open source, the SRD. (not sure what is stands for) You can use that to try and get an idea of what you'll be doing, and to start with making your character. We'll be starting at level 1, and using the 3.5 edition rules.

Also. I've found a pretty nifty online program called http://gametable.galactanet.com/. It has a chat box, and more importantly, it has a dice roller and a white-board style area that everyone can draw on. We will use this as the area for me to draw out the area you are in, and to fight any encounters you need. Like I've said before, I have a campaign setting I'd like to use for this, and because of that world I'll need to talk with anyone that wants to be a magic-user. I'm not discouraging it, but there's a few things you need to know. (This includes rangers and paladins, bards, druids, clerics, sorcerers, and wizards, of course)

So we get to pick our class?

When I played, I picked a Race, then rolled all my stats. Then I choose a class based on those stats (Had 18 intelligence and low everything else, like 10s and 11s so i made a mage).

Anyway! IF we do get this going. I suggest we use that whiteboard thing, it would make it sweet. Though, I will probably use Skype / Ventrillo as well, makes taking to each other about desisions on where to go and other stuff easier. ^.^

I don't have vent, but if everyone else gets it then I will. I have a mic, so that's fine. Just don't ask me to pay for it, heh. Poor college student is poor.

Hmmm... lol I understand now but what are the grids and sheets though? Trust me, I never saw or heard any part of D&D game being played. Whats with the dice? I checked the myth site but I can't find a tutorial.

Maybe an online instructional vid would suffice for me and all the other individuals curious to experience whats it's like.

The Dice? That Controls everything about the game. For example, say you want to kick down that door, you need to roll a dice and get within a certain range to succeed at that. Want to hit that goblin? gotta roll agian. only things that and trivial dont need dice rolls.

Okay, so I'd like to get a list going of the people who are willing to join. As well, we should schedule a day to get organized and start making all of the characters, or share the ones you've already made. If we're going to do this with the Gametable I posted earlier, we should have a specific time once a week or so that everyone is avaliable to play for a few hours. I'm open any day except Monday and Tuesday, so if everyone else can post times they are avaliable, we can get started.

For the people who are ready to make characters right off, first everyone is human, though you can be moon, sun, or star-born, stats listed below. You can be any class, level one, but if you want to be a magic character, then PM me. I have something you need to know before you make it, but it's not a huge deal. Classes not in the PH you have to ask me, but I'll probably allow it. Same thing with feats. Ask me any questions you have here or through a PM.

Sunborn: +2 Charisma, -2 Agility, -2 Intelligence. Sunborn tend to be simple and open, easy to get along with, but are not the quickest in mind or body.
Uncomfortable in darkness (no actual penalty)
Skin glows with a inner light, gives off a soft glow similar to a candle in dim light, making it impossible to hide in darkness. Special training can suppress this. (Spend a feat selection to gain the ability to suppress the glow as a free action)

Moonborn: +2 Agility, -2 Wisdom, -2 Strength. Moonborn are lithe and dextrous, but lack common sense.
Uncomfortable in sunlight (no actual penalty)

Starborn: +2 Wisdom, -2 Charisma, -2 Constitution. Starborn have good sense, but relatively frail bodies. Their wiser-than-thou manner tends to put them off with others, however.
uncomfortable in cities (no actual penalty)

They also have all of the normal human traits.
