Why do I always fail to join open games?

It says "failed to join" each time. Someone please help

Click on Start then Run.
Type regedit and click OK.
Click on the + icon beside the HKey_Local_Machine branch.
Click on the + icon beside the Software branch.
Select the Battle.net branch and press the delete key.
Click on the + icon beside the HKey_Current_User branch.
Click on the + icon beside the Software branch.
Select the Battle.net branch and press the delete key.

Delete the bncache.dat file in your Diablo II directory.

Yes, thanks for the registry tip. By the way, I don't mean to sound ignorant but is this a common problem?

i had the same exact problem, but i deleted bnetcach.net and it still didnt work. so i went to blizzard and finnaly found out what to do. i had to add a bunch of ports that i ddint have it was ports 4000 then 6112-6119 and now it finnally works, but i still fail to join like 40% of all games on open and i say that is b.net and the hackers on open

I highly doubt "hackers" have anything to do with it. If I had to guess I would say it is a problem with connection to other people (hosts) and perhaps problems with synchronizing.
