A gunman killed 26 people, 20 of them children between the ages of 5 and 10, in a shooting on Friday morning at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., about 65 miles northeast of New York City, the authorities said.

A woman waited to hear about her sister, a teacher, on Friday after a mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The gunman, who was believed to be in his 20s, walked into a classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where his mother was a teacher. He shot and killed her and then killed 20 students, most in the same classroom. He also shot five other adults, and then killed himself inside the school. One person was also injured in the shooting.

Another body related to the shooting was at another scene, the authorities said, declining to provide more specifics.

A law enforcement official identified the shooter as Adam Lanza and said that a brother, Ryan Lanza, had been questioned.

The mass shooting is among the worst in the nation’s history.

“The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,” a visibly distraught President Obama said during a nationally televised address Friday afternoon.

Since I don't have TV, I missed the event on the news.

Questions:

1. Why do the US allow guns in certain states?
2. If US entirely bans gun, would it be okay?

We can't do that. We have the second amendment to our Constitution, which, in laymen's terms, is the right to bare arms. The Constitution was drafted at a time when people were fleeing to America to escape persecution and to live under a less tyrannical rule. The 2nd amendment is there to make sure that, if the government were to become too corrupt and a revolution needed happening then we'd have the means to make that happen. Something founded on such an important notion can't be abolished as easily as that.

And which states were you asking about? Why shouldn't they be allowed access to them when the others are?

Guns are not "allowed" over here but people are able to do stuff like that as well.
(Hunters, of course, can own guns, as well as militarymen or target shooters.)
If you can get your hands on illegal drugs you can also get illegal weapons.
And believe me, there are far more cops out there looking for the drugs instead of weaponry.

This is a case of extreme mental illness, just so you guys know. Some people are extremely sick and it is hard for anyone to know. It's not an excuse, but it's sad nontheless.

My heart goes out to the families. I have a son and I would be devastated if he were killed or effected by something like this!!!!

1. It's a Constitutional right that we be able to arm ourselves quickly and effectively. Specifically, in the event of a tyranny like we've been experiencing for several years now, the Constitution both allows and encourages that citizens be able to take up weaponry and be capable of standing up against the Federal Government and it's military to ensure that the country retains it;s freedom. As a country, unfortunately, we have not done that, but rather sat by waiting for the Feds to come 'rescue' us in a strategic move that, in the end, grants than a rapidly increasing amount of control and oversight to the federal government that they, in no way, should be able to possess.

2. No. It would take me maybe two hours, from right this second, to go and find myself someone willing to sell me a fully automatic .50 caliber machine gun. I live in Arizona, one of the most stringent states in terms it's legality of anything (seriously, like EVERYTHING carries a possible prison sentence), and I could have the capacity to blow your house apart with a weapon that is several felonies long by the time the rest of the country wakes up. Making guns illegal will not solve the problem; it will make it indefinately worse every day that law-abiding citizens don'r have access to it. Currently in the US, the most dangerous thing to a robber or murderer is an armed citizen; second is dogs, third is alarms that wake up neighbors. Police are like fifth or sixth or something; in places like Montana and Idaho (where I used to live) it can take up to five hours for a cop to get to your house if you call 9-1-1..

Laws can be changed!
Good luck changing that law. Constitutional amendments require a 2/3 majority vote in both the House and Senate, and then 3/4 of the states must approve it. While the 2/3 vote is unlikely but technically possible, the 3/4 states part simply will not happen. Too many states are gun-loving states, and despite their low populations they are large in number, far more than the 1/4 required to block the ratification process.

Many people would totally agree that the medical bills are getting out of hand. If that's controlled, we wouldn't have to worry about people baring arms being dangerous.
It doesn't matter if the bills on medical would decrease. We should try to keep "dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands"

The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
