DESPERATE FOR HELP

basically....i have a brand new computer (1.4ghz Athlon, 256 DDR RAM,
Asus GeForce2 GTS), two days old, installed the latest drivers for my
video card, the latest directx...my other games work (Half life) fine
except diablo2...

basically i installed d2, (i tried full and multi)..and after the
video tests and it's ready for me to play diablo2...i open it and
when the screen flickers when it opens it just stays black.....if i
wait there a little bit patiently..i dont know if it's because i'm
clicking around or pushing keys but it'll eventually get to the
screen where i download the latest d2 patch....as SOON as it gets to
100% it just freezes and i can't do anything from
there...sometimes i can move my mouse after it freezes and i can hear
like the music loading in the backround etc...

It sounds as if you actually get the game running, you just don't get any visuals...

The patch download only happens if you log on to battlenet, so when you click around you must have hit that button... But it shouldn't freeze of course...

What kind of motherboard do you have? If it's a VIA download the latest 4-in-1 drivers also... (www.viatech.com)

Try to go back to the old official 6.50 Detonators also....

What OS do you run? Be sure to install the right drivers for your OS (don't install Win2k drivers in Win9x for example)

Try running diablo in single player and see if it still hangs. I bet the problem you're encountering is a shared resource between your video and sound. Make sure, especially with sound blaster live, that it does not share the same irq with your video (usually irq10). You can also download the patch from blizzard.com, and not the battle.net through the game.

If you saw the patch screen that means that the game is running but you cant see anything. And since you were clicking around try pinpointing the spot where the patch screen comes up then go a little bit above it. (about an inch)it should take you to single player but if i doesnt work check your video card or trade in your D-2 game for a new one.
