The Dessert Stock Market Game
Version 2.7.6
I made a simple game in C++ that I invented in TheHelper chat. It's called the Dessert Stock Market game; it's simpler than it looks. The rules are explained in the game, but I will tell them to you here anyway:
  • There are 4 different types of stock: Cookies, Muffins, Pies, and Cakes.
  • You trade stocks for other stocks based on the Current Exchange Rate (CER).
  • For example, if the CER says that 2 Cookies = 1 Muffin, you could trade 2 muffins for 4 cookies.
  • Each player starts out with 2 Cookies, and they trade them from there.
  • You can set a goal, or just play for a really long amount of time.
  • The game does support 1-player.

If you want anymore information, or if you have feedback, please post it here.

To-do list:
  • Add a version using money
  • Typing c, m, p, and a instead of Cookies, Muffins, Pies, and Cakes DONE
  • Add an objective DONE
  • Make sure you can't enter incorrect values DONE
  • Allow for 1-player gameplay DONE
  • Add a version number DONE
  • Fix pies to cakes DONE
  • Change the exe name to Dessert Stock Market DONE
  • Get results from the poll
  • Collect feedback
  • Improve the game

This is really neat, Knight!
Thanks; the people who played it on the chat seem to think so, too. Get ready for a version of this game that will be playable on the chat :D

Don't get ready too early. It might take a while :).

Nice game (Y)! (better with more people, though)

Thanks. Hopefully you'll be able to overcome those annoying problems you're having :p

I updated the first post with a bold, red warning. It's somewhat hard to miss.

does the cakes work now? :D
Um...the pies to cakes does not work, so if you're planning on getting some cakes, get them from muffins or cookies ;) I am working on fixing that as we speak.

Also, I added a poll: do you want the game to keep the decimals or to do away with them? Vote now
Added a To-do list as well.

I'm working on the next update. It should show up sometime today or tomorrow, but more feedback is always accepted

Pineapple gave me the suggestion to create a version of the game that uses money. I will be working on that as well as anything else that you guys think would improve the game.
Thanks

I fixed the link (again); it should be a direct link to the file now. If it isn't, please let me know. Thanks

There are only 2 more days left for the poll, and I can't do very much based on a tie ;)

A bug:
I was playing with 2 players (Artificial and Artificial).
On the first round the CER was 1 cookie = 1 muffin (can't remember the rest).
Both changed their cookies to muffins.
Then the CER became 2 cookies = 1 muffin. The first player changed his muffins to cookies, and the other changed 0 muffins to cookies.
Guess what they ended up with? 0 cookies and 0 muffins both. :)

And you could make it so, that it wouldn't quit the game when you enter "1" as the answer for how many players there are, but it'd just ask again. ^_^

> I'll learn how to do that...today
Good. :)

I'm fixing the many bugs and adding some more functionality to the game. The fixed version had better be out soon.

I won't learn how to do that today, sorry :p

Another update with version 2.5! I added new screenshots and a little bit of functionality (thanks to SFilip for the ideas for this update ). Download the latest version from the attachment or the link. Also, if you want to submit any screenshots, feel free to do so. Input from other people is always greatly appreciated.

Also, thanks for everyone who voted in the poll! The decimals are staying until further notice.

Nice game. When you first play it, it is really complicated, but you get used to it. A version for the chat will be cool, as well as having a version with money in it.

I found a bug with it though. If you put a letter into "How much of the stock would you like to trade" it will accept it and then at the end of the round, when you press enter for the next round the program crashes and closes.

I don't think C++ can operate in a chat room, but after maybe a few months, I might be able to make a version that operates online ;)
I'm working on the version with money in it.
I sort of fixed the bug; now the program doesn't crash, it just goes to the next round.

I'll release that version once I make some more changes. Keep the feedback coming

  • No one is chatting at the moment.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Actually I was just playing with having some kind of mention of the food forum and recipes on the main page to test and see if it would engage some of those people to post something. It is just weird to get so much traffic and no engagement
  • The Helper The Helper:
So what it really is me trying to implement some kind of better site navigation not change the whole theme of the site
  • Varine Varine:
How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air
  • The Helper The Helper:
New dessert added to recipes Southern Pecan Praline Cake https://www.thehelper.net/threads/recipe-southern-pecan-praline-cake.193555/
  • The Helper The Helper:
Another bot invasion 493 members online most of them bots that do not show up on stats
  • Varine Varine:
I'm looking at a solid 378 guests, but 3 members. Of which two are me and VSNES. The third is unlisted, which makes me think its a ghost.

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
