Diablo 2 LAN Timeout

I have 3 win 98se computers and one XP machine all networked through a D-link switch. I have Roadrunner coming into the cable modem, then to my Router (Linksys), then to my switch. I have all the pc's except the XP machine obtain ip addresses automatically. I have Client for microsoft Networks, File print sharing, TCP/IP, and the Realtek ethernet card all installed in the network settings. Like I said I have had this network up and running for 5 months now w/no problem....and now after a reformatt it decides not to work. I keep getting kicked off of Diablo 2 the computer game when I join a LAN game too. It says due to Timeout. Maybe this will help.

I don't know much about XP but shouldn't it obtain IP address automatically also?

I only have it set to Static so I can be outside the Firewall or (DMZ) zone

This will not solve the problem directly but it's worth a try since that's IMO the best setup for LAN games...

Use static IP address on the same subnet for all machines. This will not only garantee a much easier to manage network (since it's a small one. only 4 computers) but will also speed things up.

It's notorious the problems we had networking 98 and 2000 boxes... I don't have XP yet, but given this, i can only expect even more problems connecting XP and 98 boxes...

But if you really want to use dinamic IP assignments, who is managing that? the router or the XP box?

The Router is handling the all the traffic. do you really think the Static ip's will speed up the net. Before I had the Router I had them all at static and it did seem to work a little more reliable. also I read that Diablo 2 is really Buggy with the Realtek nic cards. So I downloaded the drivers and it still is giving me a timeout error when I played. I also installed Medal of Honor (Allied Assault) demo and tried that and it worked fine. I don't know what is wrong with Diablo 2, but it worked before I Reformatted.

static IPs will speed up the loading of Windows a bit but thats it (because it won't have to go through the DHCP)

once the machine has an IP it doesn't matter how it got it...

this is the fix I get from that yeah this is hard to control. disabling bots is pretty much necessary as ai and other bots would push really old threads to the top. reduce weight of view count. disable guest view tracking if you really want to push active threads to the top. a bit of tinkering for a few days with the weights and other settings should get you a decent trending widget box.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I changed the settings a bit.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Narrowed it to 7 days for the half-life and set views to 0 weight.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I dont think Trending would work for this forum it would be better to just have the last 5 posts from anywhere
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably will have to give it some time to update.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I'm guessing it is not retroactive.

One thing I have noticed and I dont know if it is by design but like 1 out of 3 times I come to the site the Anubis screen just hangs open, if I refresh it will go away but sometimes it hangs
  • Ghan Ghan:
    I've seen that as well.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Wow - the change in the stats are major. I kind of knew it was all bots but wow, to see the effect. Why the social media sites cant do something like this I have no idea.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably inflates their numbers so they look better to advertisers.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots

Weekend went by too fast. Next weekend I am going to try to do a nature thing - buddy of mine lives by the Colorado river and has some kayaks and invited me to do some kayaking from a place he knows to get on the river.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    That sounds like an adventure.
