This error happens in the first act, when I try to go to the first level of "The Forgotten Tower" quest. A couple of seconds after I go down to the first level of this quest, I hear the sound of an error popup. The game then minimizes and I see the popup, which looks like this...(SEE attached file)

(I have a fixed 320 MB swap file, I have cleaned out my startup, and have about 100 MB free when I start Diablo)
I am playing in 2D Mode, with all graphics set to lowest...

My system specs are:

Originally a Compaq Deskpro 2000 (I upgraded some things)
233 Mhz Pentium II
160 MB RAM
Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play (WDM)
Radeon 7200 w/ 32 MB SDRAM
17.3 GB Maxtor Hard drive
Windows ME

I know that I can skip quests, but I want to do this one...

Hmm... so it looks like that's not the problem, but do you have other programs in the background using up space?
Try Ctr, alt, del and exit out of all programs except systray and explorer, see if that helps

How full is your harddrive?

More information

I have very few programs running in background, and always make sure that I have at least 90 MB RAM free before I go into Diablo. I have RAMBooster running when I am in the game, but I have tried exiting it, and the crash still happens.
I downloaded the 1.09D patch from Blizzard, and now I can go to the second or even third level, but it will still crash after a little while. I have tried clearing both hidden processes and visible programs, but it did not help. My harddrive has about 3 or 4 gigabytes taken up, and I defrag and scandisk regularly...

I'd say the small swapfile is your problem. Try increasing it to 500-600 megs, or choose the let windows manage the virtual memory. I wouldn't be surprised if Diablo 2 is actually filling up both your ram and your swap file to full, afterall, I think the d2char.mpq file alone is just about the size of your current RAM+Virtual Mem combined. I'm not sure why it would only do it on this specific level, my only guess could be that it does some special caching with those levels, and it might preload the maps for the whole tower, as well as the boss's graphics/speech.

Didn't work

I set the swapfile to be managed by Windows, and that didn't work, so I increased the size of the swapfile to 640 MB, and it still didn't work...

Exactly how much hard drive space do you have free on your windows drive?

When was the last time you did a scandisk and a FULL Defragment of your hard drive?

The last time that I did a scandisk and FULL Defragment was yesterday...I have 12 GB of free hard drive space.

P.S.-when I updated the game version to 1.09D, I got a different error message(SEE attached image), but now I can go to the third level before I get the error message.

You are running into a memory issue where Windows cannot allocate as much as it needs to continue playing the game successfully, but if changing the Windows swap file size and/or letting Windows manage it didn't fix the problem, you may want to check that none of your memory is bad by running goldmemory or somesuch on it. That would also cause the error you see. Try pulling out various sticks of the memory and running the machine to see if you can get past the spot giving you problems.

Logical One

Memory issues?

I ran Compaq Diagnostics from a floppy and checked every byte of memory that I have, both reading and writing, and no errors were found...I decided to download a memory error checking program, but that didn't come up with any errors either. I sent Blizzard an e-mail last week, but I still haven't received a response...

PROBLEM FIXED

This problem has been fixed for months now...I uninstalled the game, defragmented, then reinstalled the game, and it didn't crash anymore. I forgot to even come here and update this post because I didn't really need it anymore because the problem was fixed. Thank you for all of your help though.

unregistered guy

i bumped cause i have similar problems and my ram is 512 with only two sticks. seems a reinstall might help , i havent tried it yet, i was hoping to avoid that. i have quite a few errors, 6 infact. this was the closest i got to the worst one an thought i could get answers under this post instead of posting a new thread

if you like i can post all the errors here , along with my computer spec's an such or i can post under a new thread as some of my errors have nothing to do in relation to the topic of this thread, hope that made sence, please reply!!!

if asked ill post the new thread as DartGun's errors.

this is the fix I get from that yeah this is hard to control. disabling bots is pretty much necessary as ai and other bots would push really old threads to the top. reduce weight of view count. disable guest view tracking if you really want to push active threads to the top. a bit of tinkering for a few days with the weights and other settings should get you a decent trending widget box.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I changed the settings a bit.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Narrowed it to 7 days for the half-life and set views to 0 weight.
  • The Helper The Helper:
I dont think Trending would work for this forum it would be better to just have the last 5 posts from anywhere
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably will have to give it some time to update.
  • Ghan Ghan:
I'm guessing it is not retroactive.

One thing I have noticed and I dont know if it is by design but like 1 out of 3 times I come to the site the Anubis screen just hangs open, if I refresh it will go away but sometimes it hangs
  • Ghan Ghan:
    I've seen that as well.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Wow - the change in the stats are major. I kind of knew it was all bots but wow, to see the effect. Why the social media sites cant do something like this I have no idea.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Probably inflates their numbers so they look better to advertisers.
  • The Helper The Helper:
Yeah google does not filter those bots. I remember when Apex was doing Google ads I saw the same IPs in there as I was seeing here - google is totally tracking all those bots as traffic and most google traffic, at least ours, was all bots
  • The Helper The Helper:
oh wow, i bet i can post x links now and do the webp pics now giggity

Weekend went by too fast. Next weekend I am going to try to do a nature thing - buddy of mine lives by the Colorado river and has some kayaks and invited me to do some kayaking from a place he knows to get on the river.
  • Ghan Ghan:
    That sounds like an adventure.
