my computer is pissing me off, directx is conflicting with what ever, i get illegal operation everything i try to play anygame, what do i do?!??!

system spec:
nvidia geforce 4 mx 420 (tried both 30.82 and 40.72 driver no use)
384 RAM
windows 98 second edition (with all the critical updates)
creative sound blaster pci 128

Out of a wild quess and seeing that you run Win98, i would check and see if you are having irq conflicts. If your vid card, sound card or any agp/pci card is sharing the same irq, this well cause directx/ddhelp errors.

One comment, any PCI card that you put in your computer in the slot directly below you AGP slot will always share its IRQ with the Video card. Never use that slot.

LT. Homer Simpson, you are so right, i get what ever game error with the ddhelp!!! let me check my IRQ

1st edition: ok you guys i got my video card and sound card and ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ sterring sharing the IRQ 10, also i checked and my sound card is installed in the PCI slot right under my AGP, so i will change my sound card tomorrow

also what is that ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering thing? i'm sure that's not the thing that causing any trouble

one more thing, is it ok if i just change the IRQ setting for my sound card? if yes, how do you change the IRQ setting and which IRQ should i change to?

thanks guys happy thanksgiving

is the ACPI IRQ Holder... bla bla giving you trouble? (does it show a conflict?)

try booting into Safe Mode and go to Device Manager. If you see a duplicate of anything, delete them both and let Windows redetect. You may have to do this several times before things clear up. You may need to reinstall some drivers later if Windows can't detect the device or you want a more up-to-date driver.

If you changed motherboards without reinstalling Windows from scratch you will likely see conflicts like this.

Before you start messing with the IRQ on your sound card, check to see if there is actually a conflict with it. I don't have a Windows 98 machine and my memory is muddy but I think you go into Device Manager, select that device (i.e. Sound Card), go to Properties and disable "automatic configuration" or something. It should then let you manually assign resources. Be careful not to create a conflict though :/

on there's no conflict on my ACPI the pci steering blah blah blah thing

ok well it's just lt. homer says if you have soundcard, agp/pci, and video card sharing the same IRQ then it is possible you get directx/ddhelp error which is exactly my problem

1st edition: tried what you said on how to change the IRQ rapmaster, says this resource cannot be modified, going manual override

2nd edition: dude what the heck?!?!? i changed my sound card to the last PCI slot and after i restart my sound card is still on IRQ 10, sharing with my video card!!! what do i do?!?!?!?!

The sound card and the vid card should definitely not be sharing irq. Sharing a pci or agp card with IRQ steering is ok, as long as your device manager doesn't show any conflicts.

Even if device manager shows no conflicts, any pci/agp card should never share IRGs under Win98/95, unless your running 2k/xp which uses acpi power management (which actually uses a much better irq management system) under 2k/xp you will actually see all the cards sharing under one irq.
Under 98 each card that uses any form of directX (sound or vid) shouldn't share irq. Video cards also are so data intence that sharing irqs can cause a bottleneck issues.(This includes dial-upmodem/nic cards).

LT.Homer Simpson---because I was too lazy to login.

ok but what do i do to change my IRQ setting for my sound card?!?!?

i changed it's PCI slot, no use

i tried rapmaster's method, windows won't let me, somebody please help me please i'm begging you with my life!!!!!!!!!!!

You can change irqs in the bios too.
First find an option under BOOT for Plug and Play OS.
If it says yes try no, and if it says no try yes. This switches the controls of IRQs from the system bios to Windows and vice versa, sometimes (depending on the system) one does a better job than the other at controlling irgs.
If that doesn't work try under Advance settings> Pci options> assign the irg to slot settings.

Note: some cards do not like there irq changed, so if your sound card won't changed try moving all the cards around.Maybe you can get the vid card to changed instead.

Note: If you decide to assign an irq, you must find an irq that isn't being used(sharing with pci steering is ok). use irqs 7-12 if possible.

homer your methods doesn't work

i didn't see no advanced setting in bios either

somebody else wanna give it a shot?

just why windows won't let you change IRQ setting anyway????

No two bios are the same, it possible its there, just labeled different.

i'm telling you!!! there's no sucn thing as pci options under my bios setting, i look allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll over!!!

i tried everything i just can't get my sound card off IRQ 10!!!!

swilo: i tried your sloution turned down hardware acceleration, no use

PCI bus IRQ steering gives Windows the flexibility to reprogram PCI interrupts when rebalancing Plug and Play PCI and ISA resources around non-Plug and Play ISA devices.

Without IRQ Steering Windows cannot rebalance PCI and ISA IRQs for Plug and Play devices around non-Plug and Play ISA devices to solve resource conflicts. For example, if your computer's BIOS is unaware of non-Plug and Play ISA cards, the operating system does not have PCI bus IRQ steering, and the BIOS has set a PCI device to IRQ 10, you may have a resource conflict when you add a non-Plug and Play ISA device that is configured for IRQ 10. However, with PCI bus IRQ steering the operating system can resolve this IRQ resource conflict.

To do so, the operating system:

Disables the PCI device.
Reprograms a free IRQ to a PCI IRQ, for example IRQ 11.
Assigns an IRQ holder to IRQ 11.
Moves the PCI device to IRQ 11.
Reprograms IRQ 10 to be an ISA IRQ.
Removes the IRQ holder for IRQ 10.

(yes I pasted that)

ok may be it's easier if i do this

following is my bios menu, tell me which ones to choose, then i'll tell you the configuration, kinda like a walk through

I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best

I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.
  • Varine Varine:
It's just hard to move and train people unnecessarily right now. And also the line fucking sucks, it's not any more fun. This is turn and burn so I have the bankroll, and everyone suffers for it

I think it's gonna be a good fall and winter though. We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it
  • Varine Varine:
They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know

I recently had an experience with a waiter that really brought down @Varine's point about them being in sales. The first waiter just asked "anything else? deserts?" and when the table shook their head said "ok" and left. Then the other waiter came in and started going off describing the deserts and you could see the heads turning, and they finally got a bunch of deserts

makes sense if you consider that the tip is basically a commission on sales

That's an arbitrary number. It could be whatever you want, really. Though one wonders what the use case is for uploading giant files to a forum these days.
