There's a saying that all satellites use Windows operating systems, either it's NT or 98. Maybe NASA also use Windows OSs...

So, what do you think? Maybe Mac is fine orbiting our Earth...or probably Linux is controlling the Martian space probes...

I thought satellite just transmit data, why would they have an OS? :nuts:

How do they process tons of data taken from cameras placed in the satellites?

Hm...What about the shuttle spacecraft? I have seen astronauts and cosmonauts taking phtos of themselves, and then use something that could transmit the pictures back down to Earth...

Or does that still uses a C++ processor?

We're not the programmers of the space stuff, we wouldn't know. I highly doubt they use any OS though, just a C++ processor.

They don't need to have an operating system, all it really does is create a GUI. At least I don't think they do, since they just act as a broadcasting agent. Besides, there are soooo many satellites I doubt that even if they did, all of them would use Windows when if an OS would be required, the space agencies would just write their own to do exactly what they want.

The computers that are in the offices of the people that work on them might run Windows. Unless Windows has some really fucking badass weather monitering system or something I'm not aware of.

That would probably be a camera and just something to broadcast the image through radio waves. Neither of which would have to use an operating system like Windows.

I mean, there is probably some kind of a system to control the operations of everything, which I guess would meet the definition of an OS, but it wouldn't be made like Windows is.

I'de compare the OS they have to the one of a radio or a coffee maker or something like that, just a lot more high-end.

If they did use one (I'm not saying they do), my bet is they would run linux.

Lol, you didn't know? Start -> Run -> satellitecontroller.exe

Anyways, I'm sure they have some kind of 'OS', just not a graphical one.
