Event Question

I can tell the answer to this is going to be obvious and I'm going to feel stupid...but I'll ask anyway. When I try to use the event "Unit enters within range", I can't select a unit variable for it (it says no variables of this type), even though I have several different unit variables. Does anybody know what might be wrong?

lol, your not the only one to bang his head against the wall. When I was trying to create a detect trigger for my carrier, I considered using it. But like you, I found it completely useless. So, I don't know either, but would be interested

You cannot, you can only pick units that are preplaced on the map. Sucks, doesn't it?

Instead, go the aggy route and every period or so pick every unit and check if they're near your unit variable.

Yeah, what I did.

Preplaced units.

BUT, hidden until needed.

For something dynamic, like an ability, its useless.

You could do what I did, depending on how you want to use it. I gave my unit a dummy attack that did 1 dmg. Whenever a unit comes within range, you could use an event that detects the attack. But, this will only work in limited situations, and fortunately for me, mine was one of them. You, on the other hand, will probably not be so lucky. Unless range is of vital importance, I suggest finding another way, such as region (if its a building.)

Instead, make a region as big as you want the "range" to be. Then, when you want to detect the "range" use the "Unit - Unit Enters Region" Event and use the action "Region - Move region" to your unit.

Oh, thanks! I was going to make it a periodic event and do that same thing, but that way is much better.

You are absolutely right. I DID stumble onto that. I wasn't even fully aware that moving a region could be done, but now that you mention it, it has VERY interesting applications... Thanks.

Well, unfortunately, moving a region doesn't work well with the "enters region" event...

Though, if someone gets it to work, I'm all ears

Not necessarily. Experiment with it. Look for loopholes. That is how you become truly experienced with the editor, I think (and I am a newbie at it, but I seem to catch on quick. Basic programming classes help )

No, it's fine, I was being sarcastic about being upset. I'm just doing a periodic event, which gets the same result anyway, so it works for me.
