External Speakers for laptops...

I recently purchased a new Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop which most know do not come with the greatest speakers. So, I was interested in purchasing some external speakers to offset my lack of sound quality. Unfortunately, I don't know what speakers or sound configurations (2.1, dolby digital, 5.1 surround, DTS, THX certified) that my laptop will support. I also contacted Dell and (although they have great technical support) couldn't help me with my current problem. Any advice would be extremely appreciated. Thanks in advance for all of your help.
*Note- My laptop has two audio outputs, and earphone jack and an S-video adapter in the back, if that clarifies anything for you.

The key is to find out what kind of sound card that computer has in it. You want to match to the sound card, not the computer.

It appears from

that the sound card is SigmaTel C-Major Audio. The good news here is that my research seems to indicate that if you have the correct codecs installed the sound card will actually detect what kind of speakers are attached and adapt to it. Not too shabby. You might want to research it a little more as I spent less than 5 minutes on it.
