Facebook is developing technology that would allow children younger than 13 years old to use the social-networking site under parental supervision, a step that could help the company tap a new pool of users for revenue but also inflame privacy concerns.

Mechanisms being tested include connecting children's accounts to their parents' and controls that would allow parents to decide whom their kids can "friend" and what applications they can use, people who have spoken with Facebook executives about the technology said.

The under-13 features could enable Facebook and its partners to charge parents for games and other entertainment accessed by their children, the people said.

Like we need people getting stuck on this shit from a younger age...

Granted, it's not like 13 year-olds don't already fake their way onto that shit, so whatever.

not like it matters - they don't check the age at all, they just do it to cover their ass from lawsuits

Well eventually only 13 year olds will be using fb at this rate so...

Fb used to be cool...then they started advertising, and shoving apps in your face every few seconds. I hear kids love Fb apps...

And I wonder what age you were when you got stuck on this shit called "internet"?

Seriously, what possible good could come from this?
Money.

12 year olds have friends too, they want to play games too, they may want to know what teletubby they are too. It doesn't matter what age you are... You are so negative all the time that I can't bother to read most of your posts.

thehelper.net advertises too. Use adblock if it bothers you. And you must be doing something wrong if you get apps shoved in your face anyway..

They can talk to their friends outside of facebook, play games without the internet and what the hell is a teletubby?
Using the internet for social communication is nice because it allows you to stay in contact with friends from overseas or far away. You dont need an internet connection to talk to your neighbor or school friends.
And from personal experience i can say, that i know very little, or actually no, 12 year olds who have friendships with people from other countries which they need to talk to on a daily basis.
I just dont see a point with it other then little kids thinking that fb and co are cool because all the adults are using it.

And i am not a negative person, i am actually quite happy and enjoy life. But i have a very realistic (in my opinion it is realistic) view on things and i wont lie about my opinion.

Kids spend a lot of time on computer nowadays, why shouldn't they be able to communicate with friends through internet? Also it's easy to see what's going on in everyone's life, and tell what's going on in yours with facebook :p. Most of my facebook friends live near me, and I think only 1 is from another country.

I'm a teletubby. Was talking about the "quiz" things in facebook. I have blocked them a long time ago, so I don't know if people still do them.

EDIT: What a horrible emoticon. :|

I just "unsubscribe" from people who do.. annoying things on Facebook.
I don't block or delete them because they'd ring me up and ask "why?".

I understand that, and I assure you that I am extremely competant at such things; however, after blocking a million applications to make my Fb experience bearable, I still enjoy Google+ more and hope that it becomes the popular choice one day.

People tend to have a need to communicate more. As a kid, you don't have mobile phones and the like, and children need plenty of socialisation to become functional members of society. Using Facebook for games and such is just another method of interaction with their peers, albeit one that can become rather addictive and redundant after a while.

I dont know guys, i prefer face to face conversations. Using such things like internet communication is a no-go for me when it comes to personal contacts.

Therefore clearly no one else should like to use telecommunication.

I don't really understand all the negativity. I use facebook everyday, and that's because it helps me maintain my social life and network.

I do not see why kids could not take part of the benefits of the efficient tool which facebook is. It's a comfortable tool for communication for many who feel awkard in social situations, which would help them make friends. And for those who don't, it's simply a good way to keep in touch with other children between other social interactions. Some people you don't have the means to meet very often (especially when you're a youngster), and some you might just want to talk to more than you've had time to.

Vacations? Family trips? A relative's house for the holidays? Chances are a kid would have no other ways of communicating with their friends under such circumstances.
