Man you can't put a price on this sort of tragedy... I don't know if he should get money or if the school should have to prove a higher standard of care. Things such as this really don't have a good solution but maybe it is equally his fault for not teaching his son to fucking swim.

How is it even possible to drown? If I get into the water and just dont do anything I float on the surface. You need some special talent to actually manage to drown in not-moving water. (Drowning in a river is something different however)

I was sucked down into the water by something underneath the pool. Some people say it's a small vortex caused by water pumps that pumps dirty pool water into filters.

It's always THAT kid who decides to do something "cool" that gets into trouble. The rest of the students who just did the boring shit ended up fine. The school field trip organizers no doubt expected all the kids to DO THE BORING SHIT like everyone always does. I would be surprised if they did anything that you or I wouldn't have done when organizing a field trip. That's my general rule of thumb. Could this have happened under my care? Probably... how am I supposed to stop kids from running off and jumping into a lake? F**** it, no field trips for anyone! This is why we can't have nice things.

the kid got exactly what he asked for: he chose to swim in a lake where swimming is banned for being dangerous

from the information in the story I think it's absurd that the city should be sued - it's like drinking a bottle of bleach, and then your parent trying to sue the bleach manufacturer

You don't get to see bleach manufacturers getting sued for oversight of people drinking them, despite actually having warning labels on the bottles. I'm just talking about the part "Manufacturer getting sued."
