first icon

ok, heres my first icon. dont have photo pro, or anything, i had to free hand it in paint.... just regular paint. 64 little sucky donts, thats what i had :banghead: any way, its for a reasearch called zorien fushion. zorien is the new version of gold in a space map i was thinking about, and this lets you harvest 30 at a time or something.

That's very nice for using Paint, gj. One thing I would suggest, if you'd like suggestions, is to make the vert/diag on the z a little thinner. It bulges out a bit, which distorts the image. And if you were to put a 1-pixel line of white around the entire thing, it would be a lot clearer. But I'm not sure if that's what you're going for.

Anyway, vnice, much better than my first one and I was using PhotoshopCS to boot

It looks good for somethig done by paint (4/5) but if it was in a program like paintshop pro or photoshop it wouldn't be so good.

Overall for paint i gave it 4/5 (above)

Well, there are free trial versions
You wouldn't be able to use them for long, obviously, but they are a temporary solution.

Im a graphic designer and im still using Paint sometimes to study on.forex my avatar made in paint. All in my work time i learned something. In Turkey we call it Aesthetics and it depends.

If you compare your work with other buttons made in other editors your button sux..

But what makes this button okay?
- U have worked to make it look better
- It is a real hand work instead editors
- It can be look really nice if all your units buttons in this style err. you can create a new kinda postmodernic icon fashion...(Im seriosus)

What makes this icon not greate or better?
- Icons reflets the ability, unit or items thet they are belongs to. Lets look at interfearce first why Move button not shown as a grpahicked "M"? Couse images tells human brain fatser than letters&words and they are easier to remember. And art is telling something in a different way than normal. Forex if u are an artist and u want to draw a fish, dont draw a fish. draw what u feel on a fish instead to make it a real art.
- Even u are using Letters u must make its way of reading as easy as much possible becouse of the issue i have told above you can decorate the graphic but the decoration must not take the importance of the message that graphic gives

Hope you will do better jobs on paint and on other editors

Eastetics? Don't you mean Aesthetics, which means the "art" or the "beauty" of "it" (depends on what you say there are aesthetics for)?

Ok, i didnt vote but ill just give a few suggestions

-your icon seems very out of place if you put it in WC3, its too bright and shows too many different items (ususally its just a claw or a lightning bolt)
-those lines really make it hard to look at the icon for more than a couple of seconds
-try not to make the outlines of the ZF so bright, it changes to the background too suddenly, you may want to consider having different colors (lighter shades, not as bright though)

Overall, its pretty good considering its your first icon and you made it with paint good luck with your other icons
