This news is well over a month old now, but I only just noticed it because nobody is talking about it on these forums.

"In 2003, many of the luminaries behind the Diablo series split from Blizzard and formed Flagship Studios, where they promptly announced...well, nothing. Instead, they worked quietly behind closed doors for two years. Now they've finally revealed their first game - Hellgate: London is a sort of Diablo style action RPG, but in a fully 3D environment that you explore from a first person view.

The game takes place in contemporary London after demons have invaded and commenced to terraform the world. The locations range from ruined streets to underground settings such as subway tunnels, Roman aqueducts, and WWII bomb shelters. Flagship seems to be getting the most out of their setting as an intersection between the Old World, the modern world, and a post-apocalyptic ruin.

Part of what's exciting about Hellgate is that there really isn't anything like it. Flagship's game engine will randomly generate levels for your missions. Much like Diablo's inventory systems, Hellgate will have customizable weapons that you can upgrade and configure however you like. Your character will also be able to upgrade and swap out different skills. In keeping with the RPG concept, during combat, hitting your target is determined by your skills, not your dexterity with a mouse. In fact, Flagship calls guns "spell delivery systems," as a way of explaining that this isn't really a shooter so much as an action RPG with a first person perspective. And if anyone can pull off that sort of twist, it's the guys who gave us Diablo."

The forum software says we have 554 members online now. We did not have that many unique visitors the whole day today. Too many bots and the disconnect between the forum counts and the stats.
