Game Quits to Desktop A Few Seconds After I Start It

I recently recieved Battlefield 1942 as a birthday gift, and I'm unable to play it.

I installed the game perfectly fine, and everything about it is legitimate. I didn't need to download any DirectX updates or anything.

Whenever I try to start the game, it shows me the box with the tank tread and helmet, then goes to a black screen for a fraction of a second, then quits out of the game and I hear the *duh* sound. I thought it was something with the video specifications, seeing as thats the part of startup where all the developer logos are displayed. However, the EA technical support files are written for Windows 95 and 98, and I'm running Windows XP Pro. Therefore, they aren't of any great use to me.

I tried running it on my family computer, and it works fine (slow downloads, but what can you do?). My computer is one of those Compaq Presarios. I have 256mb RAM. I'm not sure what my video card specs are. My hard drive has been wiped once though. I don't know if that causes a problem.

According to the EA files, this is a common problem involving either background programs or video specs. Can someone tell me how to fix the problem? The game sounds fun, and I'm tired of looking at the box and sighing. :banghead:

Possibla solution

I tried every single fix mentioned in this forum (refresh, drivers, patches, etc.) and nothing worked (after it had been working for years and then suddenly stopped). I ran dxdiag and noted that in the directx files list it warned that dinput.dll was missing. Since it's now virtualy impossible to reinstall directx unless it is _really_ broken (stupid microsoft- why can't I force a reinstall? or how about a _complete_ library download?), I had no choice but to download the dll and copy it into c:\windows\system32. Once done, it launched immediately without error.

You may be missing a dll or two as well. Just make sure the ones you download get scanned by your antivirus software and are of similar version number of the other dll's.

Best of luck!

Help me do that!!!

Whats a dll? I am a mac guy who bought a PC just to play Battlefield. Worked great for a year, and then in mid game play, it quit and crashed with a black screen. Now I just get a black screen at the start of the game after the title. I need a reply to fix this and please speak in Total Moron dialog, because I know nothing about PC's. thanks!

A DLL is a Dynamic Link Library. It usually contains code, and it is for any kind of recource that may need a certain thing more than once, so it is all stored in one library instead of duplicating.

First try patching, or un-patching. Then try updating or un-updating your video drivers. Then try installing DirectX again. If none of that works try just reinstalling BF2. It's kind of a magic fix in some situations where there is a little bug you just can't find. Hope that helps :)

OH yeah!
Total Moron dialog, because I know nothing about PC's
Are you implying something about PC's? :p

Have you tried reinstalling it?

This is due to outdated video card drivers. I had this problem as well.

  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
