A few days ago, I got an Access Violation error the moment I started running TFT - this happened three months after the installation, in utter disrespect of how smoothly it ran in the past. I defragmented the hard disk, checked for errors and finally ran the game with opengl - the latter made it work, although with its shoddy graphics, I now find myself in the position of not wanting to play it. I have no doubt that there's nothing wrong with the game itself, as several others have roughly the same problem, crashing at startup even though they had been working fine last week.
It should be worth noting that before installing my present, archaic version of WinXP, most games crashed "amiably" just before the menu screen, kicking me back to the desktop and giving me Windows' characteristic error sound - same thing that happens now. What do you suppose is wrong?
Even if no one can suggest a way to get my games working again on their regular settings, all I need to know is... How do I run the World Editor with openGL? I also have UMSWE, which seems to be experiencing the same sort of problem.
Since this is a tech support forum, maybe someone also heard of this problem... I deleted the winshow dll twice already after cleaning up the registry, and it came back a few hours later, even though I didn't download anything and just visited a few sites that I consider safe. Could a program have had the initiative to re-install it, and if so, what free scanner could I use to detect the culprit? I tried AdAware, AVX and Spybot... None of them found anything.
