Generic CD drivers for Win XP Pro

Apparently somewhere along the line my CD/DVD-RW drivers (utilizing generic Windows XP drivers) got corrupted and/or are missing. I have no idea what the file names are, so I cannot redownload/retransfer them. I cannot get them from the CD or repair from the install CD, because the computer cannot read CDs with the drivers gone (which is, basically, the problem itself).

I was wondering if anyone knew what names/where I could obtain these generic Windows drivers or has any other bright ideas on fixing the problem. I have tried manufacturer drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling service packs, enabling all of my services, running virus/adware scans and seeing if the drives themselves are defective (they aren't). Both my CD and DVD-RW drives stopped working at once.

All I really need is a download link to generic Windows XP cd drivers, or some way/method to obtain them.

For my DVD-ROM and other optical drives, the drivers are:

%systemroot%\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\imapi.sys
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\redbook.sys
%systemroot%\system32\storprop.dll

I also have 3 others listed for drivers, but those are the digitally signed ones from MS, so I'd guess those are the only critical ones.

The other drivers, in case you want them too, that are associated with other programs like CD burning software and QuickTime are:

%systemroot%\system32\drivers\GEARAspiWDM.sys
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\pfc.sys
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\PxHelp20.sys

I got those files from my brother (who also uses WinXP Pro) and tried reinstalling the devices to no avail. Windows Device Manager spits out some error about the "device driver not found" or that the file is missing or corrupt. How is this possible after replacing the files? What else should I do?

I really hope this isn't a hardware issue, and I find it unlikely both of my optical drives would fail at the same one instant by chance. Thanks for your time

Maybe the cable is what went bad. Are they on the same cable?

CD works now, it was a filter on the driver. Solved by deleting registry key as stated here:

I know nobody on the forum staff really gives a crap, but in case someone ever finds this on a search engine.. well hope it helps.

I recently experienced the same sort of problem. Thank you to the person who posted the link on the microsoft site. After editing the registry keys listed in the document, I can now access my CD-rom drive. ^_^

Hi, I also found my way to this help page for an error code 39.

Could you please explain what is meant by delete the value?

I tried it once and totaly crashed my pc...had to restore.

I have many reg. entrys by this name HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Do I simply highlight the Upper and lower filters and delete?
