Google has issued an apology after a bug in Chrome’s password manager caused saved passwords to disappear for many users. The problem, which started on July 24 and lasted nearly 18 hours, was due to “a change in product behavior without proper feature guard.” This issue affected users of the M127 version of Chrome on Windows, causing significant inconvenience.
The glitch (or better called google chrome password bug) left users unable to access their saved passwords or save new ones, causing widespread frustration. Google identified the problem and worked quickly to resolve it, but not before impacting a significant number of users.
With Chrome’s user base exceeding 3 billion, the impact of this glitch was substantial. Google estimates that about 25% of users experienced the configuration change, which means roughly 750 million users were affected. Of these, around 2% faced issues with the password manager, translating to approximately 15 million users experiencing vanished passwords.
Initially, Google provided a workaround that involved using a command line flag to bypass the issue. However, this solution was not user-friendly and required technical knowledge. Recognizing the need for a more accessible fix, Google quickly rolled out a permanent solution. Users must restart their Chrome browsers to restore the password manager’s functionality. Google apologized for the inconvenience caused and advised any users still experiencing issues to contact Google Workspace Support for assistance.
