MrSeagull written a good review bout the E3 alpha. Feel free to discuss it in our forum.
Game Style : MMORPG
RPG style : Hack n’ slash/shoot/cast &/ Player Vs. Player
RPG ratings zero to five stars.
Entertainment value: ****
While the hard-core RolePlayers might find the game a bit repetitive, the
average player will have a great time playing this game. The missions are
exciting and challenging. Players who also prefer some PvP action can get
their fill in the arena, while those who tend to shy away from it can have
nothing to do with Player vs. Player missions.
Role Playing: *
Role-playing was virtually non-existent in this game, with a few
exceptions. One, requiring users to make two-word names encouraged players
to be more creative, so there were less “XxHax0rXx” names. The quests
provided good story quality, however none involved anything other then
combat.
Occupational Interests: **
The game provided little other then fighting and gaining skill gems. The
only option was crafting. One can acquire materials to craft weapons and
armor with from various creature drops or containers found in missions or
solo areas, or they can salvage practically any item into its base material
components. However, collecting the items is as far as it goes because the
player must have an NPC ( Non-Playing Character) craft, salvage, customize,
and enhance the items for you. Also one can enhance weapons with various
pieces of weapon components found in missions and enhance armor with
class-specific runes that increase a variety of attributes. Finally, a
rather often traded commodity was dye. Dyes are a dropped item which could
be found in a variety of colors from basic hues to metallic silver. These
dyes could be applied to armor to customize it or mixed with other dyes to
produce other colors.
Graphics: *****
The game’s scenery and animations were beautifully done, as well with the
wonderful player models. Magic was done well from casting the spells and
abilities to watching the effect. Although there were some areas that needed
refinement, such as the sky never seemed to stay a consistent color, and
sometimes it too awhile for textures to focus. Overall, I found it to be a
beautiful game.
Sound effects: ****
The various sound effects were well done, I found little flaw with them,
though not finding anything exceptionable either.
Over all: ****
Even though this game was only playable for a few days, it was an instant
hit. I found it very entertaining. There were a handful of issues with bugs
and various glitches, but for a alpha test it went by very smooth. The demo
provided a taste of the game’s features, though only providing a handful of
missions and little room for character improvement. A few issues with
movement and interaction existed, for example, trying to pick out the
enemies from a cluster of ally warriors and creatures as a ranged/magic user
was difficult. However, the game had some innovating things that most
hard-core MMORPG’ers would just love, such as when a party starts a co-op
mission, they get their own private section to use, so there is no fear of
kill/item thiefs or spawn campers. Plus the game implements a turn-based
item drop distribution and a auto-gold sharer, so everyone gets their fare
share of loot. Plus, for people who lone wolf type players, there are many
solo missions where you get your own private area to spend as much time as
you want. The subject most RPG’ers dread the most is dieing. While most
games incur experience, gold loss, and item loss penalties for death, Guild
Wars only penalizes you with a temporary loss of maximum health/fatigue that
goes away after killing a few monsters or ending a mission. There was no
permanent penalty for death.
Good points :
Great graphics, good entertainment value, exciting game play, and good
features.
Bad points:
Handful of bug issues, glitchy movements, bad creature AI path finding in
crowded areas, and player interface (i.e.. clicking to attack) needs some
refinements.
Overall:
There will be mobs upon mobs of player petitioning the creators of Guild
Wars to open up the alpha again and swarming local game stores when this
game is finally released.
*Edit* Guildwars will have a one time fee once. The game may be available in stores but will certainly available be on game magazine's cd's and up for download .
