hdd not reading space available correctly

Once in a while I fill up my hdd completely (only 4gigs) and well today I did again. This time there is a problem. I checked how much space was available and C drive shows me 331mb free, but I had recieve a pop-up msg saying that there was no room. So I freed up a couple of megs and started scandisk and defrag, hoping it would solve the misreading. Well when I finished doing both, the reading had not changed. Where are the rest of my 300mbs? Any ideas what I can do short of formatting?

Also scandisk shows 0 bad sectors and I had set it to fix any errors found automatically. I had done a Full scandisk/defrag.

Windows pops up that message when a drive has under 10% of it's capacity remaining. So in your case, under 400mb.

So once I reach the 10% point of my hdd, Windows won't let me use the remaining space? I've been able to use up space to the point of only a few measly megs left.

It gives that message if there is a problem. The only thing I can tell you is to get another hard drive. You cannot really trust the amount of space that is being reported to you - and if Windows wants more disk then you need to give it to it.
