WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Long-term heavy use of marijuana may cause two important brain structures to shrink, Australian researchers said on Monday.

Brain scans showed the hippocampus and amygdala were smaller in men who were heavy marijuana users compared to nonusers, the researchers said. The men had smoked at least five marijuana cigarettes daily for on average 20 years.

The hippocampus regulates memory and emotion, while the amygdala plays a critical role in fear and aggression.

The study, published in the American Medical Association's journal Archives of General Psychiatry, also found the heavy cannabis users earned lower scores than the nonusers in a verbal learning task -- trying to recall a list of 15 words.

So marijuana makes you less emotional/fearful/aggresive? Sounds good to me! *ignores memory loss*

The fact they are finally doing some long term studies is a good thing. This is stuff people have already known for years but finally some studies with hard scientific evidence. Basically this proves you can smoke yourself stupid

Dude, you have no idea.

I don't smoke pot, but some of my friends do. We were reading note cards in class a few days ago, and my friend read the first two words wrong, they were really "I seldom" but he said, "2 condoms". Funniest crap in the world. I called him a retard.

I wouldn't be surprised all the stoner kids at our school are dumb as shit... but i think it's a chicken or the egg type thing in that case.

But marijuana cigarettes... lol.... :p

Wow, 5 of them daily for 20 years? I could only imagine what that costs.
I've always wondered why people pay so much for something so stupid and illegal. Whats funny is that lots of the illegal drugs are found in over the counter meds, such as Dextromethorphan. Stupid people, killing themselves faster.

I wonder what this will do for the medical users. Hmm.

That's your opinion. People spend much more money on things such as video games, drinking, etc. It's all just entertainment.

And just cuz it's illegal doesn't mean it's not right.

Drugs being illegal causes the Gangstas and the Gangsta lifestyle. Legalize drugs and all of those people become junkies. The glow of booze, drugs, and money loses its glow real quick when the money is gone. Think about it. If they did that the government would have to come up with other ways to fund its Black Ops.

I disagree on the Black Ops part, but I do agree that you could help with the "drug problem" if you were to legalize it and take away the allure of the "gangsta" lifestyle.

This is almost entirely a matter of dosage. Alcohol is persistently evaluated as being a harder drug than cannabis, and you can bet if yet another study was done on people who drink excessive amounts of alcohol, the negative side effects would be shown to be overwhelming (as has been shown in the past).

I agree sir. Alcohol is more powerful and destructive then Marijuana. Alcohol deals prolonged brain damage, more so then marijuana could. In addition, it damages the liver. Alot. I know this firsthand, as someone I know drank so much that now if he has 1 more drink it could kill him because his liver got so fucked up from him drinking to much. If you want to ban substances based on how much they can harm people, ignoring alcohol is a glaring hypocrisy.

Indeed, however, video games and other such entertainment have a longer lasting timespan, and far far less adverse effects.

I personally don't really care if people do drugs or not, in moderation. I would never befriend someone who does drugs 24/7 though.

How can you tell the difference between real traffic and indexing or AI generation bots?
  • The Helper The Helper:
The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
