Sci/Tech Helium shortage prompts scientist's balloon use warning

It is something guaranteed to catch the eye of most young children on a day out - a huge bunch of floating, brightly-coloured helium balloons for sale.

And for many people, a vital element in arranging a party is sitting down with a cylinder of helium to fill dozens of balloons with the lighter-than-air gas.

But according to one academic, such occasions may soon be a thing of the past. Tom Welton, a professor of sustainable chemistry at Imperial College, London, believes that a global shortage of helium means it should be used more carefully.

Helium cools the large magnets inside MRI scanners - the medical devices that provide doctors with detailed images of what is happening inside their patients' bodies.

Looks like Levon's family business will no longer thrive. Elton John is to blame.

Anybody up for a party where we seal the rooms and fill with a 80/20 helium/oxygen mix?

but.. balloons leak.. and the helium just goes back into the atmosphere? or do we get helium from somewhere else?

If we are able to farm helium from our Sun, we wouldn't have to worry much about this. The only thing that I know, our helium reserves are scarce and limited. Earth can't reproduce helium without constant radiation and nuclear fissions, something everyone don't want near their homes.

but we don't actually "use" helium.. it's not like we burn it or react it with anything... we just move it from place to place - it's the 6th most common gas in the atmosphere (OK it's only 0.000524%), but it should be possible to just filter it out somehow..

Harder to filter that out, when helium can't be found below 4000 feet above the ground (in the air, of course). They will float near the top of the atmosphere, and will get blown away by the solar winds outside of the atmosphere, which makes finding helium even harder and costly.

Can't we just send giant baskets into the sky to pull the helium down?

Wished it was that simple. I'm not chemist nor astrophysicist, but this is what I concur:

Solar winds (magnetized ion charges) may also change the molecules of helium (inserting or knocking out ions from helium), therefore if you bring a basket of them down from the sky, you might end up with products that are not helium.

I'm pretty sure gas diffusion means that helium isn't going to concentrate at the top of the atmosphere, rather it will be fairly constant throughout.

It leaks out of the atmosphere. It's not here anymore.

I keep hearing about this shortage yet I am not seeing any reduction in balloons. WTF? If this is such a crisis and even though this old news it is still mentioned today how come I can still go get a bunch of party balloons or my own helium any time I want to?

Reservoirs of helium were found since the article was published, and the industry had been securing more supplies for helium. Some news for example:

There are also helium recycling programs and conservation efforts going on:

But nonetheless, helium will run out between 10 to 200 years:

The bots will show up as users online in the forum software but they do not show up in my stats tracking. I am sure there are bots in the stats but the way alot of the bots treat the site do not show up on the stats
  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
