HELP ME MY Diablo 2 wont work!

I just recently bought diablo 2 for my new cpu, it installs perfectly, but when i go to play it, it spins the cd then stops and nothing happens.. my cd-rom wont open either, it doesnt display any error messages so i dont know what's wrong. i tried compatibility modes, defrag, scandisk, update windows, update d2 nothing hapens!!

My CPU:

Win xp
1200 mhz
256 ram
40 gig drive
LG cd-rw drive

Visit the Windows Update Site and make sure you download the compatibility update.

I installed the compatibility update. When i put it to win 95 or win98/me it says the following: "unable to load KERNEL32.dll"
"please check your cd-rom for the disk and hit retry", and if I put the compatibility to win 2000 or set it off it loads for 5 seconds then stops, and the cd-rom wont open...... Great I bought 3 very expensive drink coasters

Have you tried turning compatibility mode off ? All my games are playing perfectly without compatibility mode, but the upgrade is still needed.

You should download any driver update or critical updates posted on windows update. What did you get so far ?

What is your CD Rom's full name ?

it shouldnt be the cd-rom drive cause i know someone that has the same one and their diablo 2 works fine

- Bad Ram >> Test with this program: http://www.goldmemory.cz

- Overheating >> Often this would be accompanied by spontaneous rebooting of the computer. This can often be fixed by cleaning off any dust you may find in the computer. Make sure you unplug your computer before dusting it.

- Device Conflicts >> Right click on "My Computer" on the desktop and then properties. Under the Device Manager tab, any conflicts would be reported with a (!) besides the device's name.

- Corrupted Windows installation >> Open Start menu, Program Files, Accessories, System Tools, System Information.
From the tools menu, try the different options. It will tell you if anything is corrupted.

-Firewalls >> Firewalls or Anti-Viruses could cause this error. Make sure you disable any firewalls before playing the game.

Also, this could be caused by your motherboard. What are your full system specs including your motherboard ?

I have tried disabling firewall/anti-virus dont help much.

I have noticed a few strange things while i was browsing my cpu, first of all in the add/remove programs, diablo 2 shows up 2 times.
and also in the D2 folder i see 2 game launcher icons 1 is normal and the other has no picture, I tried em both and they do the same thing.

My system spec's are at my first post.

My proccessor chip is intel pentium III xeon proccessor.

Video card: Intel(R) 82815 Graphics controller ..... LOL , i havent had any troubles with that i play Half-life/Counter strike often.

Anything else im not sure where to find.

First of all I think the problem has to do with win XP, all my other games/programs work fine and my comp beats all the mininum req. by like 6 times.

Does anyone else have win xp and has encountered the same problem as me?, if so did you overcome this problem?, what did you do?.. etc.

Reinstall Diablo II. First off, uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs in the control panel. Then delete your Diablo II folder. Make sure you back-up any Single-Player characters you may have first.

5 - Do you have the latest drivers for all your hardware ?

6 - Have you done an online virus scan ?

7 - Do you have any firewalls running ?

10 - Has Diablo II ever worked under Windows XP before ?

11 - Has Starcraft ever worked on your current computer before ?

12 - Do you have Starcraft's Expansion Brood War ?

13 - Do you own a legit copy of the game or pirated ?

14 - Does this happen under Single-Player, Mutiplayer (Battle.net) or both ?

15 - Do you own any other Blizzard games ?


Please take the the time to anwser all these questions. They might help finding the leak.

OK.... today i got an idea to try diablo 2 on my old pc to see if it was actually my cd-rw drive causing the problems.. But before i did that i decided to install direct x 8.1....... I must have been drunk or my mind was taken over by aliens at that moment. ,
now when i go to play it on my old pc, it loads and i see it on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen but shortly after my screen goes black to load and then stops. and i have to reset, a while back before i had direct x 8.1, I installed the demo, everything ran good, no problems, is this because the demo's are different than the retail version?, does the retail require more speed/ram? or is it just the fact that direct x 8.1 is incompatbile with most blizzard games including diablo 2? also I cannot uninstall direct x 8.1... BAHSHIZNET!!!!!

PLZ HELP, MY DIABLO 2 HATES ME.

It sounds like your CD is corrupted in that case. I seriously doubt DirectX 8.1 would cause these problems, it works just fine for me. So let's get this straight. You cannot play Diablo on your main computer using an CD-RW. You test on an older computer using a regular CD-Rom and it still fails ? I'd guess your CD has gone bad indeed. Are there a lot of scratches on it ?

no actually there are no scratches at all or finger prints, and im on my seocond copy

Try updating your video card drivers. It might not be compatible with the newer DirectX version.
