The applet is written in Java.
However, it didn't have to be written from scratch. There was already a chat applet available.

The applet was premade, but I suppose you would need the Java SDK if you wanted to make one yourself.

Perhaps have two chatrooms, one for special members and one for normal members?

Of course this leads to registrations by bots to get into the chat to spam. Hm, that's a shame, because a tech help chat would be great for people.
