Are you receiving a 'Please insert play disc' error message when trying to start the game?

If nothing happens when you try to start Diablo II, or if you are instructed to insert your Play Disc when it’s already in your CD-ROM drive, then please try the following steps:

Install the latest Diablo II patch
You can find the latest patch information available for Diablo II on our patch page (http://www.blizzard.com/patches/)

Use the original disk
If you are using a backup CD, a burned CD, or a CD emulator program, use the original game disk instead.

Administrative rights
Windows 2000 users should make sure they have administrative rights on the system they are logged in with and should make sure ACPI is enabled in the BIOS.

Check your system for Viruses
When the game files have been infected by a virus such as the Win.CIH virus or another similar worm program this error may appear. Check with the company that made your Anti-Virus program to make sure you have the latest updates for the virus detection software. Check our security page for more information.

Gateway users
Typically with Gateway computers there are two things that conflict with the game running, a program named The Help Spot and if you are using the original OEM drivers for the sound card, the Gameport Joystick will conflict. Uninstall The Help Spot and disable the Gameport Joystick. For step by step instructions on how to uninstall The Help Spot and disable the Gameport Joystick go to: (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0399p)

Kenwood TrueX
Users with Kenwood TrueX CD ROM drives may require a Firmware Update to read the Diablo II Play disk. The Firmware Update is available for download at the Kenwood Technical Support Site. For more information go to: (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0400p)

Real mode drivers
Windows 95, 98, and NT users may have a conflict with Real Mode Drivers loading for their CD-ROM drive. Please disable any Real-Mode drivers, as they are known to cause conflicts within the game. For more information on disabling Real Mode Drivers go to: (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0402p)

Protected mode
Make sure you are using Protected Mode (32-bit) drivers for your CD-ROM drive. For more information on Protected Mode Drivers go to: (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0401p)

Sync data transfer( Windows 95/98/ME )
Try enabling or disabling the CD-ROM settings for Sync Data Transfer, DMA, and Auto-Insert Notification. For more information on enabling/disabling CD-ROM setting go to: (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0404p)

Intel's Ultra ATA
Users with Intel's Ultra ATA driver version (6.10) may have problems reading the Diablo II Play CD. Diablo II will work with the newest version of Intel's Ultra ATA driver (version 6.20) available for download from: (http://appsr.cps.intel.com/scripts-df/download.asp?url=/2454/eng/intelata620_enu.exe) To find out if you are using the Intel Ultra ATA Controller go into the Device Manager and look under Hard Disk Controllers (for Win 95/98/ME) or IDE Controllers (for Win 2k/XP). The entry will appear as Intel 82801 BA Ultra ATA Controller.

CD-Rom drive letter
Force the Reserve Drive letter assignment of your CD-ROM to match the current drive letter assignment of your CD-ROM. For more information on how to change the drive letter assignment of the CD-ROM go to: (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0398p)

Submit your information
If the above suggestions do not work, send Blizzard support your system information to: [email protected].

its for the expansion

its for expansion and gives me the message please verfiy that your diablo 2 expansion disc is in the cdroma nd click retry i do same message i did download the patch didnt work

There is much more to t'kron's post than installing the latest patch. Read it again and follow the steps carefully.

Are you using a legit (bought) copy ?

Yes i did buy the game for a store

Yes i did but the game from the store it is Diablo 2 expansion game and i do have diablo 2. When i put the game in it takes forever to load so i hit alt cntr delet and it says game not responding i close it. the it says cdrom disc error and then beloe the heading it says Please verify that your Diablo 2 expansion disc is in your CD Rom drive, then click retry i click retry nothin happans. I cnat even open up my cdrom after this i have to restart the little light truns red when i try to.

I sometimes get this problem with some of my CD's... I think its because my computer is pretty old, so no doubt the CD drive is old too.

Doesn't Diablo II require a minimum CD drive speed?

i think the problem is with newer cd rom players coz their firmware is way more uptodate .
if u have a cd burner try that one .

What are the specs of your CD-Rom?? Is it a combo drive?? Have you looked for any firmware updates to it??

I have the same problem (as yet unresolved), and mine is a Samsung SN-308B DVD/CD-Rom. If you have a different model, most have firmware updates that allow the drives to properly read the Securom copy-protection, which is the root of the problem.

I've been working on this problem since January, and my drive is the only one that seems to consistently have problems with Securom that none of Blizzard's fixes (or any of the other fixes I've gotten from other helpful users) help with. So, if you have a different drive from me, your chances of getting a fix for this problem are decent. Otherwise, the only thing you can do is use a no-CD hack with your legal copy of the game - this isn't something I'd even bring up except that I've spent close to 6 months on this problem, and gone through all of the normal channels, and Blizzard can't help me.

Guys just a heads up I am going to be shutting the site down soon. I am just waiting on the NUON people to decide whether they want to transfer forum data and keep the discord. My email is [email protected] for anyone that wants to keep in touch and I have a facebook too. I will make an official post later. Love you guys and will miss everyone!

Oh no - please don't lose the Nuon content

  • The Helper The Helper:
Someone email AtariAge and see if they want me to transfer the forum data over to it
  • Ghan Ghan:
Could probably keep NUON stuff around here if we wanted.
  • Ghan Ghan:
Hmm what to do about the World Editor site though?
  • Stephen Stephen:
I'd rather personally just own a backup of the Nuon data than see it go to AtariAge honestly. If it gets enshittified as per usual, or if some of the "regular" Jaguar folks get there, it's not gonna be fun
  • The Helper The Helper:
There will be a github of the forum data so the NUON Forum Data I guess would be available there
  • The Helper The Helper:
World Editor is technically Ryoko stuff not mine you guys can keep that I am not in that even
  • jonas jonas:
:( end of an era :(
  • The Helper The Helper:
Dont think of it as an end jonas - think of it as a beginning, because really my friend that is what it is.
