problem
p2 350 mhz
no floppy
HD master on primary ide cable
CD REW slave on primary ide cable

no secondary ide cable

just 2 devices on one primary cable

during bootup it says secondary harddisk failure press F1 to continue

i have a strong feeling that the ide controller is shot to hell
when i put in the cd rew as master on the seconday ide cable it still gives me the msg while there is a master device on the secondary ide cable .

me does not compute :)
 
hmmm weird

well one time I spent hours with a hard drive only to discover that the sticker on it giving the jumper config for master/slave/cs gave the wrong instructions(!) Couldn't find the specs on the web for that model so did some trial and error
 
I assume that the computer doesn't recognise the CD drive?
 
I think your problem may have something to do with the BIOS settings. I had a P2 350 that refused to recognise my CD deive after a while but 1 flashed BIOS later it was back to networked fun! You should give the BIOS IDE autodetection a try first as it could just as easily be a faulty drive.
 
Come to think of it - replace the IDE cable first ! If it still says there is a fault with the secondary drive when the drive is plugged into another cable and you have replaced the cable - it must be the IDE controller - try updating the IDE controller via Windoze website. If no luck - its time for a new motherboard !

Ok now you have me confused - you said in you last post that u do not have a second IDE cable. So what were you talking about here then? Are you talking about the second port on the IDE cable?

So if you have only 1 cable - the CD-R should be set up as slave and the hard disk as master with slave present. The IDE settings should be on the HD and the CD-R - check the manufacturers website if there is not a diagram on it. Also for all the cost of another 3 way IDE cable - buy one and rule out cable fault as it seems you have been pulling at that cable a lot ! :D
 
maybe my lack of english is causing some confusion.

however i have the machine working .

however there is no ide cable on the secondary ide port on the mobo . ie no drives are hooked up to that controller .
still the error msg conclusion controller is fubar
 
but my question was, does the CD drive still work even with that message?
 
well in the config while i had the cd rom placed as secondary master it would give me the error msg . it would detect the cd rom tho . it failed however to boot .
 
oh, I was just wondering that's all. ONly 2 of my drives are recognised by bios and dos-prompt, but all three work in windows.
