WinXP has a program, built in, that lets you choose which applications or games have better cpu priority, but Win98 and Win98SE does not. No fear--there is a great little program that can help set priorities in 98. Its called BW CPU Controller 1.6.1.. This program can set the priorities of any running process in windows(except the few system files that cannot be changed inside windows itself). This progam can help increase performance in many games and applications. You just start the Cpu Controller, then start your game,--alt-tab or alt-esc out of the game. Then go to the controller and hit the refresh button. Find the game.exe listed in the processes window, click it and hit the HIGH priority button.(Do not use maxium setting this could pull to much priority away from system processes)--Now go back to the game, but do not close the CPU Controller.
(In Counter Strike do not enter the game--atl-tab before you enter from server list area or you will loose sound.)
Here is the download page with further documentation.
