Is there a way to make the page have a minimum height of say 1000 pixels, but to be able to stretch when the iframes are opened?

Yes, you can use the min-height CSS property instead of height. So for #main, change height: 1000px; to min-height: 1000px; and you're ready to go.

I can't really understand why you would like to have a long area with nothing but white on it when the two iframes are both hidden, though. If you remove the height property completely (i.e. without adding a min-height one) there will be no extra white space.
