I see all these rules and all the posting that cridisize people of how they're not followin them and all, but i have not once seen a thread or post tell us what some of these little icons and buttons do?? I mean they are every where. I just read the forum rules and i saw nothing about HOW THIS FORUM WORKS. So im going to play dumb and ask everyone out there on this forum, WCIII WE, what the heck these things are and what they do. (Keep in mind i DID read the FAQ at this forum.)

1) Lets see whats that little weight thingy on everyones post and what the heck is reputation? Oh and is reputation good or bad?

Anwser by: Marksman
The weight thing is what you use to give reputation. Click on the weight at the top of the post that was helpful and type a message to give them reputation. You can only give so much every so often to one person.

2) What's 'Close Current Tag' and 'Close All Tags' mean, and again what do they do?

--deleted--

4) How do i subsribe to a thread? I mean why do i get these little check marks next to every single thread i post in?

5) Does it matter how many posts i have?

6) What the heck is an Avatar, why can't you call it like Name Image or something?

7) Why can't i change my own thread title? Why can only the Mods do it, i mean it my thread.

8) Im confused what does all these abbrivations mean? Like whats a WEU and WE and all those stuff?

9) What does 'Automatically parse links in text' mean? Should i have it checked or no check?

10) Whats a skicky note?

11) Also i see all these testing map threads and then at the top of the screen i see the post maps here! Why is it they can post their map there yet they are breaking the rules, i think somehow, and no one cares that they just blew off the top post, which somehow always stays first?

How is this meaningless info?? Tell me that. I'm pointing out to the mods that they should answer these and so that new forum ppl know what they ar doing

Thank-you marksman! i will add your answer.

::Edit::

How is this info? They are all questions....

Ah but that is where your wrong!!!!

I have read them, and please read the top of my post!!!! They say somethings on them but never explain what they are and what they do, which a good FAQ should have.

PS: For anyone about to post here PLEASE READ THE FIRST POST!

::Edit::
Im sorry there is one that i missed the vB code. I will fix that.

Relax a little.. its not the end of the world... you have to read a little more carefully....
Question Number 1 Answered here
http://www.thehelper.net/forums/faq.php?faq=vb_board_usage#faq_vb_referrals_explain

#2
http://www.thehelper.net/forums/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_vb_vbcode_toolbar

Like I said MOST of your answers can be found there.

As for being more detailed... I would definately agree they could be.... But at the same time, should an FAQ for a forum really need to tell you what PHP is.... I mean... Hi Google :D

If people can't find it in the FAQ, and a search on Google doesnt help them with terminology.. Generally they ask, and are answerd. But seldom is the case.

Also take into considderation most forums, vbforums, phpbb etc all work relatively the same. Therefore redundancy of explaining EVERYTHING would be a quite considderable waste of space in the FAQ and make it read like stero instructions...

Insert Slot A into Slot B if and only if the defining characteristics of Slot B coincide with the procedure you followed last week when you disarmed the portable nuclear device while being suspended from your ankles.

Cheers!

This is mainly for 'Special Members' and the 'Mods / Admins' only because they kinda controll that stuff. But the rest of you can, which i encurage you to, post in this thread and give us, the new people of this forum, some understanding of what this stuff is.

Nope doesn't explain what reputation is only what your referral thing is.

Please note not many will take the time to look it up. I mean would u? I wouldn't.

How does tell you what it is and how it work make you think your disarming a nuke with stero instructions in your head? Tell me, im very interested in what your think.

Not most, but few.

Not many people do. They just read whats there and probably don't want to have to go to 5 different sites just to get an answer for a simple question. i know i wouldn't would you?

So what im trying to say is: Put your self in the position of some1 who is new and is keeped being pushed by everyone else to read the FAQ, when most of em probably didn't, and that he should know this stuff. Then answer what im saying here.

1) Lets see whats that little weight thingy on everyones post and what the heck is reputation? Oh and is reputation good or bad?

Its good.. its like user comments...

2) What's 'Close Current Tag' and 'Close All Tags' mean, and again what do they do?

Tags are things like embedding quotes, colors etc... closing the tags will look for any tags that are still open and close them. ie

[ code ] blah blah blah ..... with no [ / code ] (spaces used so it doesnt create the code.

3) Whats a
Code:
 and [PHP]

This is a tag for displaying types of programming languages.

4) How do i subsribe to a thread? I mean why do i get these little check marks next to every single thread i post in?

Click "Forum Tools" or whithin a Thread, "Thread Tools" Subscribe is under there

5) Does it matter how many posts i have?

Not really.. The little name next to your user name... ie... Junior Member (Am I really helping anyone?) is just flare... fluff... extra stuff

6) What the heck is an Avatar, why can't you call it like Name Image or something?

Avatar according to Webster...
1. The incarnation of a Hindu deity, especially Vishnu, in human or animal form.
2. An embodiment, as of a quality or concept; an archetype: the very avatar of cunning.
3. A temporary manifestation or aspect of a continuing entity: occultism in its present avatar.

Avatar is a good word for "Picture that represents the person"

7) Why can't i change my own thread title? Why can only the Mods do it, i mean it my thread.

Because its a probably security issue and thats the way the admin's want it I suppose.

8) Im confused what does all these abbrivations mean? Like whats a WEU and WE and all those stuff?

WE generally Stande for World Editor... and believe me they could use a thread on Acronyms... there are a few I dont know.

9) What does 'Automatically parse links in text' mean? Should i have it checked or no check?

Parsing a link in text will make it appear as text instead of a link.... I'd leave it alone.

10) Whats a skicky note?

Sticky makes the Thread stay at the top. Its a moderator function.. that way they can make a Thread like the Rules or FAQ or something and it always is up top so its easy to see.

11) Also i see all these testing map threads and then at the top of the screen i see the post maps here! Why is it they can post their map there yet they are breaking the rules, i think somehow, and no one cares that they just blew off the top post, which somehow always stays first?

The "Post Maps Here" are for Finished maps.... other threads they are "testing" their maps.... testing a function, terraining issue.. whatever...

Hope that helps.

L.

I understand what you mean... Could probably create a "NEWBIES READ THIS FIRST" Thread.. but chances are... they wont.. I would say 9/10 times people just ignore the stuff they dont need. And you're right most would go look things up. I am just a geek in that regard...

The Stereo instructions thing was a joke.... meaning.... Explaining all that would get very technical, as well as pointless as people who don't know, probably wouldnt read it, and if they did want to know, they are the ones that would search for it.

.........

i realy didn't want all the answers before the mods / admins saw this, because i was hopeing they would add it to the FAQ or the rule thread and change the rule thread name to Thread Info - A MUST Read or something.

But i already knew that answers and this was, again, targeted toward the mods / admins and new forum people......

Sooooooooo, what shall i do...... keep bumping till one of em sees it?

sorry didn't see your post before my last one.

Yes thats what im sort of saying, but there is a way to writing important information while making the reader want to read more, thus knowing how to use this forum. And no you dont realy want the thread to be obvious as to what it holds so the reader gets curious and takes a look, again he learns how to use this forum.

MODS PLEASE READ AND TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION ON WHAT HAS BEEN SAID!!!

(if you think im yelling im not.... its to get you to pay attention)

I know a lot of acronyms from back in my day as a AIM fanatic and et cetera. If you give me an acronym list, I'll attempt to tell you what they all stands for in another list :D

Yet again no one reads what has been posted....., its not me who needs em im just trying to set a point with the mods and whoever runs the forum..... you could post it here for any new forum person who needs help......

I wonder why i can't change the thread name to New Forum People Help - Mods Look - Im confused?

yea theyres a few things on here that confused me at first, and still confuse me

See the rifleman at the top left of my post? Thats the Avatar. You can change it in User Preferences. Some mods and older members don't like them, I guess they think it's more professional to just have a name. Name image? Wheres your sense of style...

I was just trying to make a point.

Mayo also has vinegar. Vinegar is a very important part of it, it's effectively a delivery method FOR vinegar but hidden

It's a neat ingredient. But yeah it's eggs. But a LOT of people think eggs count as dairy because of the fucking food pyramid the US keeps trying to make a thing
  • Varine Varine:
I think on the new one they did change it, but idk. I don't really care whatever the government is doing right now because it's consistently absurd. Like what is RFK doing in charge of health anything? I love the bear story because WTF was that, but also, pretty much every time he talks it's WTF. Like even his voice sounds microwaved
    +1
  • Varine Varine:
The pyramid is fucking dumb as shit, no matter how you arrange it.
  • Varine Varine:
It's actually remarkably easy to make mayonnaise though. Fun fact, it USED to kind of be a French mother sauce. I believe that Careme considered it one, it may have been aioli but that has also built a different meaning than it used to. An aioli is just mayonnaise I mixed with other shit typically, I didn't start it don't come at me
  • Varine Varine:
It's very hard to do it on a large scale though
  • Varine Varine:
Depending on how you pour the oil the consistency can vary wildly, but that's true for most emulsions. I can only make about two quarts at a time with my robo coup, and if I have to make several in series because I forgot to order it becomes really obvious even when I do it. We have to wait and mix them all together to make sure we have the same thing.
  • Varine Varine:
Hollandaise is also kind of like that, emulsions require a very steady hand to do exactly the same every time.
  • Varine Varine:
Luckily I live in an age with electricity so it's way fucking faster, but when I was just a boy trying to find my place I had some hardcore chefs that made use do things like that by hand. It is WAY easier to get right by hand because you control it and can feel it, but it takes soooooo much longer. And on the scale a modern kitchen requires... I serve 400-500 guests on average per day right now, if I had 100 then we could do things way better
  • Varine Varine:
But we can't do that. In the winter yeah, but I HAVE to get people through here right now so I can afford the staff that we CAN do that. We have about 100 days of summer, and if that summer doesn't make us what it will, then I can't operate the other most of the year with my staff. The owner is talking about closing two days a week to cut down on labor, I told him he should cut down on vacations and it did not go great. I do think I won though, I have to keep my fucking core staff and they have to be gainfully employed
  • Varine Varine:
Sure some of them might take a second job, but I can't just cut my entire staff to unlivable hours, nor can I can cut them off all winter if I want them to come back.
  • Varine Varine:
And also, there is no fucking way I'm pulling these hours come september. I only do this right now because I have to, the second I don't have to be the one doing it I won't be
  • Varine Varine:
I have a 5 person core staff in the kitchen, not including me or Chef Ben
  • Varine Varine:
Though two of those people are likely not making it this year. One of them has been replaced, the other I am kind of trying to. He's being a giant bitch, today I had to get onto him because in the three hours before I left he had taken like thirty minutes for cigarette breaks
  • Varine Varine:
And he was also complaining to me the other day that he was out of weed so couldn't smoke any before work that day, and was confused about why I was annoyed he was telling me, his boss, that he is smoking weed everyday before work.

  • Varine Varine:
Like yeah I can tell. I don't need to fucking know.
  • Varine Varine:
So now he's getting scrutinized and will not be top of the list. I know I don't have the smartest people but I do expect them to have some common fucking sense
  • Varine Varine:
I did do a rare thing for me and hire a girl last month without warning. Everyone was made at me because I started her at like 21, but she worked with me before and I was like don't care. She made 19 at her old job and I wanted her to come work with me, she is the best
    +1
  • Varine Varine:
I'm going to get her a raise at the end of the summer. She wants to go to school again, but I want her to still work with me so.... she kind of can just tell me what the price is. I can go to 25 if she keeps up. I need to get her onto line more, that's what she wants, but I need her where she is and it's not fair that she doesn't get the little bit of raise that comes with it. She can do it no problem, I've worked with her there.
  • Varine Varine:
It's just hard to move and train people unnecessarily right now. And also the line fucking sucks, it's not any more fun. This is turn and burn so I have the bankroll, and everyone suffers for it
  • Varine Varine:
Eventually we'll get it balanced, we'
  • Varine Varine:
we're starting online orders and stuff, but I also turn that off all the time because I barely keep up trying to be the best at Sysco shit
  • Varine Varine:
I think it's gonna be a good fall and winter though. We're going to have a good staff, they will get along, they will be able to manage the workload and the complications, they know how to really cook this year, like every person on line knows their steak temps. Some of them use thermometers a lot and they don't always use them right, but they do know how to do it. Failure, especially in this field, is the only way to get better. They'll get it
  • Varine Varine:
They won't get feel down while they do the thermometer, but we didn't have an instant read probe when I was learning. Like they did but god knows how off it is, you HAD to do it by feel. Even if the chef was fine with me bringing my own, it takes too long. Poke and know
