I have a small problem.

I can change my homepage setting easily once my comp is on, without any problems and i can surf normally.
But when I switch it off and back on it always changes back to another website. I can then change it again without any problems and i can then surf normally.

What can i do about it?
I have already cleared my internet cache. I have got rid of the offending website which had misteriously appeared in my favorites. I have also cleared the cookies.
Any other ideas?

Its very frustrating cos its one of those damn sex sites (and i am happily married).

while in the browser Go to:

Tools
Select Internet Options

In the top section titled Home page:
change the address there
click on apply

that should fix you up.
 
I have done that, perhaps i wasnt clear in my original post.
Thats the problem, it automatically changes it back to the other site after i turn comp off.

It is okay as long as the comp is running or even resetting the comp. But once i turn the comp off (ie power is cut) then the homepage setting are automatically changed when i restart it.

Which web site does it reset to?
 
Its called 'lolita' something or other.. I have blocked it being accessible, but it still tries to load up. Its pretty frustrating. I think i got from looking at some warez sites. I didnt realise it till the next day.

Oh, and another thing. Since my problem IExplorer also has a problem with the driver: AVSNDSYS.drv
It happens when i try to play a yahoo java game like chess. I have to ignore it and hten i can play the java games normally.

If it is related i dont know.

There are a few Javascript based trojans that do this: one is called JS/Seeker-E


You should go to Windows Update and download all the Critical and Security Updates. That should patch up the hole.

If you install a virus scanner or TDS (suggested above) it should be able to pick these trojans up and deal with it.

Normally it is not possible to get a trojan from viewing a web page but due to some holes in Microsoft's programs (!) trojans can do little things like this

Look in your Windows Startup folder (start menu) for a program with a .HTA extension. That is probably what is causing the problem.
 
I hadnt thought of trojans. I downloaded that program and used it on my c: drive. There was a file on it called: removeit.hta.

So i was all hopeful of having my problem resolved but alas no luck. I did delete that file but after turning comp on and off my homepage was changed again to the other site.

Well, thx for your time and help. If you have any other ideas i'd be grateful.

Go to Windows Update and download the critical updates as suggested before. After you restart re-run TDS - make sure you clean out all the temp files.

Well, i have downloaded allt eh updates for windows, i have rerun tds. I have deleted 2 files one of which has an .HTA extension.
Now i want to delete the temp files.
I have cleared the internet cache of cookies and files, and i have cleared the seperate cookies folder.
There is a 'temp' folder in windows. Do i clear all of that too?

Well, thx for all your troubles. I am going out now so i will have to look at it tomorrow.

if u run TDS make sure you have the latest radius file located on their webpage .
their latest radius file contains over 11.000 trojans now .
TDS helped me out last friday when someone had a worm in his notebook.
i could not install nortons or mcaffee that was somehow prevented .
an online virus scanner crashed time after time .
TDS was able to delete all the worms on the the HD . was a real nasty one .
 
I've had the exact same problem. I accidently got into some porn sites, and one of them decided to make itself my home page. (My poor mother was horrified when she borrowed my computer to visitit her Internet bankservice) No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't change the default page, it kept changing back. So I figured that the page must have some shit in the registry somewhere. I checked out the url of the page (which was kind of hard since it redirected and there were thousands of popup windows, anyway...) and searched for the url in the registry. There were eight or ten references to the url in my registry, and when I had deleted them all, I could finally change my default home page to something less offensive.

I had no trojans and no viruses on my computer at that time. After cleaning up the mess that the pornsite had made in the registry, I started wondering what may have caused the problem. Probably, the site used some security hole in IE, so I got all the security updates. And yes, I learned my lesson.
 
I have run several virus checkers, i have run tds several times, i have deleted every temp file and cache i can find, I have updated windows and STILL no result.

And then...
Ahh! Bingo! Thx cloudberry. I dont like being thought of as a perv either.

So it could have a line in my registry. BUT i am very fearful of messing something up in there.

I know you have to run regedit to get to the registry. But what then? Could you tell me some exact steps i can do to find what i am looking for?

Go in the "Edit" toolbar and click "Find...". Copy-Paste the URL of the homepage and it should find any entries related to it.

You should write the results here before deleting anything for it might damage your Windows installation.

When you dispose of the homepage, make sure you go on the Windows Update Site and download all critical updates.

What Internet Explorer version are you using ? You might want to upgrade to 5.5 or 6 if not done alwardy. Microsoft no longer supports older versions so any new security holes are left unpatched.

You did mention there was some driver error with Internet Explorer ? In that case, go in the Start Menu, Program Files, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. In the "Tools" toolbar, click "Internet Explorer Repair".

I searched for the url in the registers and got this result: It seemed to have opened up the Internet Explorer folder and the it showed this on the right hand side. (the brackets, [], at the start indicate what the icon before hte text looked like).

    this is the fix I get from that yeah this is hard to control. disabling bots is pretty much necessary as ai and other bots would push really old threads to the top. reduce weight of view count. disable guest view tracking if you really want to push active threads to the top. a bit of tinkering for a few days with the weights and other settings should get you a decent trending widget box.
