internet problem

ok this just started happening recently but whenever i try to upload the smallest type of file my computer loses internet connection and i have to reset the router and cable modem. i cant even upload an image to imageshack or picgoo or any similar site without losing internet. i am connected wirelessly to the router, but i even tried hard connecting to the router and still the problem occurs. i'm fairly sure that something is wrong with the router and i have no clue what to do. i have a D-Link 514 Wireless Router revision A or B (i think they are basically the same).

other types of internet activity is fine, its only uploading that causes problems. any help/information will be greatly appreciated.

You need to upgrade the firmware of your router. Seems like it is out of date. Go to D-link's website and find information about your specific router, and there will be a link from there to upgrade the firmware.

I believe d-link is like linksys, in that when you upgrade none of your settings are lost. Only when you downgrade are settings lost. This should fix your problems. Post back with any questions.

i went to the dlink website and i already had the latest drivers installed so i dont think its that.

it is NOT a driver, it is FIRMWARE. This is basically your routers gui, controls, everything about the software side of it. Most likely you're having problems with an old version of your FIRMWARE. If you have never updated your firmware since you got the router, there will most likely be one. If d-link is anything like linksys, about every 3-6 months a new release comes out.

-edit- also you have not given enough information so i can find the firmware for you. You will have to do it yourself or post accurate information about your router.

i had a problem similar to this, however it occured whenever i play Counter Strike or Downloaded stuff, I did a few virus scans, no idea what fixed it...didnt seem like the scans did but after about a week it stoped, maybe its your ISP working on sutff.

sry, i meant firmware. i have the latest firmware installed on my router. o.o

thats basically all that u need to find firmware updates from the site. i checked the site and i already have the latest firmware update. and no, they dont keep releasing updates every six months or so...most recent update is over a year old. sry for the confusion when i said driver...


--edit-- @sqrage, dont think its my ISP since my friend who has the exact same ISP that i do is able to upload and everything is fine.

try unplugging your router, then unplugging modem, shut down computer wait at least 5 minutes then turn on router and cable modem, wait for it to finish its initialize and then turn on your computer.

so should i just buy like a 30ft ethernet cable and hook it directly from the modem to the computer?

unless you need to split your connection , i would say, yes!

ugh they're expensive but o well....actually im going to make sure that the router is the problem by connecting my computer directly with the cable modem just to make sure lol.

I got one last option that i can think of. Try to hard-reset your router to reset all of your settings. (caution: you'll need to re-enter all information by doing this). However, if there is a problem you can't fix, or can't find, best bet is to reset back to factory defaults and reset up from there.

If this does not work, search the net for problems with your certain router and these problems. Next step is to downgrade your firmware and see if that will solve any problems. (only drawback is this might introduce new problems.)
