target computer with windows xp

status : 4 partitions

problem
user put my documents folder on d: partition

user formats c: partition

reinstalls windows xp

user logs in with same admin account same pass and admin name as his previous install

but when he tries to goto my documents on his D partition he get's the following error

Acces Denied

any clues on how to solve this .

It's NTFS?

First, disable Simple File Sharing: (put it back later if you want)

Click Start then click on My Computer.
At the top of the My Computer window click on Tools then click on Folder Options.
In the Folder Options window click on the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings scroll down to the bottom and the last option will be “Use simple file sharing (Recommended)”. Uncheck this option.
Click Ok to apply settings and close this window.
The next time you check the properties of a folder you will see a Security tab and NTFS permissions if you are running a NTFS file system.

Then, on the Security tab, go to Advanced and give your account ownership. You can also edit the permissions to give your account (or the Administrators group) "Full control"

The problem is that the folder is restricted to the user account who owned it before, which has a specific "SID" -- even though the name may be the same. So it is only allowing access to an account that doesn't exist on the new system. This will fix that.

Although I've done the same thing before and it worked without needing to reset the permissions... so I suspect the files may be encrypted - if your friend used the Encrypting feature of NTFS5, you will have a serious problem.

but there was a password on that folder.
