Invalid Boot.ini

I get the error each time I start my computer

Invalid boot.ini
Starting with C:\Windows\

This just started happening recently, I havent installed any new software or hardware.

I have Windows XP Home SP2 with all the latest microsoft updates. I have also done a virus scan with bullguard antivirus, also a a spyware scan with MS Antispy but nothing came up.

look into the boot.ini itself and see what is the problem ..i mean giving your background/rep that shouldbe a piece of cake or i am mistaken ???

It appears my boot.ini got deleted somehow, but I havent deleted any files for a few days now, and the problem just started yesterday.

do this

Make a file called it boot.tmp Open it with notepad and use this.
[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

save the file to a bootable floppy.

Get a boot disk http://bootdisk.com

Boot to dos. at the A:\> type:

copy boot.tmp c:\
c:
attrib -s-h-r boot.ini
rename boot.ini boot.bak
rename boot.tmp boot.ini
attrib +s+h+r


Remove floppy, then reboot machine

The partition number above is subject to change based on yuor config. Also, if the file is not there, you can just create a new one and be done with it. Nothing enforces that it must be hidden, read-only or a system file for it to work.
