Just upgraded... CD drives not recognized.

I'm all hooked up on my upgrade...

I went from a P3 500 to an T-bird 1.4 on an ASUS A7M266 DDR board, with 512 DDR and everything. Windows 98.

I've been running it in "jumperless" mode so far.

and the floppy drive and hard drive work fine... (in addition to the system) But.... The system isn't recognizing the two CD drives. I can get into windows and everything... but the drives aren't getting recognized

They're two CD drives from my old *cringe* HP pavillion. One's a DVD drive and the other is a read/write. They are both on the secondary IDE Ribbon Cable. The DVD is on the end (master right?) and the Read/wrtie is on the intermediary connector (slave right?).

On boot, when they are set to auto-detect in the bios, the first one will be displayed as jibberish and ends in "plus 8100", and the second, not at all. Its worthy to note that the read/write drive is an "HP CDWriter -Plus 8100- series". Its also worthy to note that the jibberish seems to be a slightly scrambled version of "Hewlet Packard CD-Writer Plus 8100" When I set them to be CD-ROM drives in the BIOS, they are both displayed as "drive fails".

The closest I can get them to being recognized is an unamed media device, that it tries to read as a sound device of some sort.

Both are recieving power.

Check the jumpers on your Drives.. You would want the CD R/W set as master.. and the DVD as Slave.. if you have to share the same ide cable..

Position on cable doesnt matter at all.

Optimally .. you should set it up this way

Primary IDE

Hard Drive - Master
DvD Drive - Slave

Secondary IDE

CD R/W - Master
(Other HD if applicable) - Slave

again .. the position on the IDE Ribbon Cable doesnt matter .. its the jumper selectors on the back of the drive that determines the Master/slave position.

Oops... when the first is jibberish... the second reads as "None"... NOT drive fail.

Both drives have 3 positions for jumpers on the back: "C.Set", "Slave", and "Master" Both are currently on C.Set. So you're saying that I should set the jumpers on the drives manually?

Will this jack with the overall "jumperless" motherboard? Will I have to go through and set all the jumpers on the board for bus speed, etc. as well?

Also... I just opened up the case and looked inside... It really is preferable as far as running cables from here to there and there to here... to have the two CD drives on the same IDE cable...

Changing the jumpers on the drives will NOT mess with jumperless mode on the motherboard. NEVER EVER EVER EVER use cable select mode EVER. It sucks. Period. Set the CDRW as master and the DVD as slave. It should work fine then.

Yeah, Swilo is right, Cable select mode is one of those neta ittle things to make you think there are options other than Master and Slave. Cable Selet just means "Don't Bother" in English.

I would recommend moving the drives around. HAve the CDRW drive in the top 5.25 bay with the secondary cable going to it, and then have the other drive(read-only yah?) in the bottom one and have it on the primary IDE channel with the HDD.

IF you aren't sure as to the best way to change the jumpers on the drives, get some precision forceps(tweezers) and grap hold of the middle of the end sticking out. IF you have a relatively steady hand you won't lose the jumper. You can use your fingers if the drive is out of the case.

Do you have a mobo manual?? I only have 2 jumpers on my mobo, that I can remember, and I know one of them reset's the CMOS. Why are you running in jumperless mode?

Jumperless mode just means the BIOS will auto-detect the speed for the CPU and set everything accordingly.
It's much safer if you don't know much and are afraid of accidentally setting the FSB or core voltage too high. Or if like me you're just lazy.

Cset is Cable Select.. and as swilo said.. it sux big time.

and yes.. if you want to use the same IDE Channel.. then CD R/w should be Master and the DVD should be Slave.

Sorry I wasn't able to get back to you guys... But now I'm posting from the recently upgraded computer... And everything is working great.

Your help really made this possible...

CD/RW is on top as master, the DVD is below as the slave...

Everything is running nice... Thank you for the help.

To clarfiy, it was suggested that the DVD and CDRW not be on the same cable so that you could directly copy CDs from the DVD to the CDRW. This shouldn't be necessary if you have 700 megs free on your hard drive, and there should be no performance drop from having them on the same cable.
The way it's set up now is fine.
