I saw my roomates son playing a map called 'Hero Builder' yesterday.

I laughed my ass off.

This map, has a 3 color mini map.

One huge texture for the hero arena.

One huge, flat, square grass area for fighting.

No doodads or terraining, nothing anywhere on the map.

Just a giant mass.

I can see the guy editing it. "I want a little grass here" and takes the tool, puts down a giant square, and decides it looks good.

LMAO!

wow... how long has he been mapping?

an huge load of doodads usually helps... lol

Yesterday I was trying out my new TD online for the first time with four players. And when the first level was done, five creep timers were suddenly spawned and when they expired, there were creeps everywhere.

The others apparently thought it was hilarious. I did too. :D

I can't see why people do that. I mean, when I work on a map, I want to make sure it's exactly what I see it in my mind, not just what my talents will make me. I mean, I'm not going to spend all my time on a map that is crap and wasn't fun to make, that's jsut stupid. What gets me is people make these crap maps, and whine and complain afterwards that there maps sucked even though they put very little effort into them. People have to be realistic, everyone wants the next DotA, and I mean EVERYONE. So if that lot of people haven't created it, what makes you so special? Sorry, I seem pessimistic, but it bugs me when people start whining about their maps that aren't popular even though they spent an hour on it. Shouldn't you make maps for the sheer fun of it rather than making it because you want it to be popular? I might be wrong, but Ryoko seems to have made his TD for the fun of designing and creating it, not just the only thing on his mind was "omg tis is going to b teh next wintermaul111!!11!".

Same thing with my Virtua RPG...though my idea is kind of stale at the moment :/

I have to laugh at the Legendary Heroes map. At least, I think that's what it was called.

Anyway, I don't know WHAT they were expecting to get out of it. The ONLY feature in the map is a very small little lake in the center--no bumps, no trees, no nothing else.

He copies the hero altar for summoning that particular hero, and then the goal is to buy lots of tome and cheap items and duke it out with the other guys.

The heroes are not thought out. If you know what you're doing you can play as a "God". These are demigod heroes that can either summon impossibilities or be an impossiblity. Aka, they attack faster than you blink, and they're agility based (more armor than you can ever dream due to tomes).

i am making a very cool hero arena and it has a lot of doodads, and all that good stuff, but what makes it so different from all the others, is that the hero max level is set at 100, it is taking me a long time, because there are plenty of heros, and all those abilities that need to go through 30 levels! lol but im sure it will be fun, and im having fun making up all the abilities, jus for fun, i wil post my favorite ability right now:

Split: (Based on storm earth and fire) Splits Rahu (custom hero rahu is...) into 2 weaker forms of himself. the lesser forms increase in power with each level gained.

Err

Ok, the only reason im posting a reply is just for Conan... NO! Not everyone wants to make the next DoTA... in my opinion DoTA is a cheap rip off from Aeon of 6 Gods, it has crappy "custom" abilities, characters with no appeal at all and a very sucky win condition. Being the fact that it basically COPIED Aeon of 6 Gods you would have thought that they would have improved it but no... it sucks. Aeon of 6 Gods is far more superior than DoTA, why? Because its a classic... its a Legend... it marked its placed in WC3 history and DoTA comes along to try and take that fame... why? Because the DoTA map maker had no ideas of his own and decided to copy for a living. Great life man, you know. DoTA is neither practical nor original and neither is it much of an upgrade from Aeon of 6 Gods, i mean apart from the increase of lag. There could have been at least the slightest glimpse of a good ability thought up by the map maker himself instead of an ability the same as critical strike except suckier and spread out across 4 or 5 levels with a different name.... for example.

There, you thought nobody could do it.
Theres my place in WC3 history....
I flamed DoTA, made people realise how sucky it is....
And got away with it too.
And to distract you....

dude nobody cares if you flame DotA.

Most of us have gone way past the "its fashionable to flame DotA" and on to the "we don't really care anymore" stage.

forgive me for sounding like Mr. Thermistor from the battle.net forums, but the only reason this is different is because it is a worse concept, not a better one. You have fallen into the newbie trap of taking a map concept and just making the numbers bigger without putting any real thought into decent design. I would have nightmares just at the thought of trying to balance something like this.

Reduce the max hero level to something smaller, reduce the max ability levels to something smaller, and have a think about map content, rather than just trying to inflate numbers.

Get on wc3search and check most of the map, almost all of them are DotA ripoffs. They think "omfg tis map is oging to be so 00ber and it going to b so pop!!11!!" thewn half way through, theyg et lazy and throw some crap in there.

DotA is the biggest map on Warcraft III, so people try to copy it, thinking they'll get some popularity, but teir maps fall into the pit of DotA's.

Most of us have gone way past the "its fashionable to flame DotA" and on to the "we don't really care anymore" stage.

Listen to the almighty Darg. Nobod cares if you think DotA sucks, they'll say F off and keep playing it. There's two groups of people. DotA obsessors, dominating most of Battle.net, then the people who moan and cry about DotA, but the fact is, nothing has surpassed it, people will get bored with this AoS, then move onto the next one.

As Darg said, nobody cares if you flamed DotA, join the group of other flamers, nobody is going to be shocked and gasp when you say it sucks. Do this, go to the DotA forums, moan and whine about it there, then let them tag idiot on your head. (Words taken from Guinsoo)

I personally aren't obsessed with DotA, but it's the only thing I can host besides Footmen Frenzy which will attract people, therefore I play it. It's over, it's done, DotA's just a map, get over it.

I was just thinking about how battle.net is like the TV industry.

In TV-land we have lots of reality-shows that networks want to air, not because they are quality shows, but because they are safe shows that for some reason people will want to watch right from the start.

Networks are afraid to air original, quality TV series because it takes a long time to draw in the fanbase and so they will suffer from ratings problems.

Its not a dissimilar situation on battle.net.

Everyone wants to make a DotA map, because people will want to play it without caring if it is a quality map or not.

Nobody wants to risk making something original, because it just won't draw in the crowds that DotA draws.

Same story with hosting maps (as conan aluded to).

Of course in both TV-land and battle.net, the creators of original, quality content always draw much greater respect, even if their work is not appreciated by the masses.

edit: I'm moving this thread into the general forum because there are no worldedit questions in here.

Some comments.

Funny, the DOTA comment made cross-references with the map stealer map. Heh heh.

But in its defense:

Yes, DOTA has been overdone through many generations of maps.

It has never recieved a new concept, terrain, forces or objectives.

BUT

Guinsoos dota, stolen as it may be, is probobly one of the best maps I've played. I'm addicted to it.

The spells and heros are far more fun than the original. The item recipes are totally fat, and its constantly maintaned, upgraded, and expanded. The idea of bringing in the unreal sound FX was tight too.

I'm so addicted to it - I should uninstall WAR3 and get my evenings back. Its the joy of the win. Joy of zapping someone with your level 5 Dagon you spend thousands to upgrade it. The joy of watching them get UBER shit-talking mad, just so you can kill em again. The joy of someone crying OMFG IMBA HERO! when you own with a hero no one plays or likes.

Imma go play now. Heh heh.

If the map is that good you should post about it on the news site.

Ummm....The Helper are you sure you want to see some dead bodies around this site? Heh. If you do, get ready for a fist fight;).

I would but, theres a lot of controversy.

Yes, its the most popular map on battlenet.

Which also, makes the other half hate it. A lot. Lots of jealousy / envy. Especially because, it was technically stolen.

Which is another controversy. It was stolen when it was just in development, almost NOTHING of the orignal remains, except the name.

They have there own website and forums tho, which due to the ammount of flaming and children I dont visit anymore cept for downloads.

http://www.dota-allstars.com/

This map even made Computer Gaming World magazine last year. I would say, that says a lot.

I personally hate clan TDA, there assholes. Even if you asked for a link exchange, they'd flame you or ask for money. Guinsoo's posts seam to be a fair guy, but iunno. I like his map though. But I'd never make a donation. Heh.

Kinda like wc3sear.ch. I hate HATE it, but I still download stuff from it. Heh again.

Last I heard, they get over 300,000 visitors a month. I wish I could get a link on there, but read above.

DotA got over 40,000 hits on wc3search for version 6.00, in less than a week. Not even NCCD did THAT good. Shows you how much people "hate it". ;)

whether it was stolen or not it shouldnt matter because its a game... and a map created by a person which people play, regaurdless of where the credit is from... he helped people have fun... and thats all i have to say, since you cant sue for "map stealing" stop bitching....

Battlenet testing Ryoko TD.....

One version, creeps did not spawn for players 7 & 8. They got spawned for 5 & 6, which was double units.

One version, creeps for 5 & 6 did not move after being created.

One version, the camera for the cars all locked on player reds car, so the others couldn't see what their cars were doing.

One version, the coins for the shooting gallery wern't removed, and they built up a big wad of coins.

Yes, it was embarrasing.

No, your not alone. :D
