tawny water fowl that lived in a tiny corner of Madagascar is extinct, wiped out by an introduced species of predatory fish and by nylon fishing nets, conservationists reported on Wednesday.

The Alaotra grebe, Tachybaptus rufolavatus, also called the rusty grebe, had been highly vulnerable as it was found only in Lake Alaotra, eastern Madagascar, said the Swiss-based International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which compiles the famous Red List of endangered species.

The grebe was wiped out by habitat destruction, by the introduction of a carnivorous fish called the snakehead murrel and by nylon gill-nets which accidentally caught and drowned many birds.

"No hope now remains for this species. It is another example of how human actions can have unforeseen consequences," said Leon Bennun, director of science at BirdLife International.

I only have one thing to ask in this situation.
Where the heck was those damn animal people when this bird needed them?

Don't introduce foreign species to places that are as good as isolated... Learn your ecology, now.

wtf.
Pardon me, but...
Why should I care?

omg! though there is like 1 extinction a year so this really isn't that strange, and it doesn't effect you in any way, it's an example of how humans will screw the earth.
It is estimated that humans will look like a mass extinction in the records of future intelligent species or just future us. Many expect the mass extinction to be worse than the one that wiped out the dinosaurs (when your worse than ten kilometres of rock hitting the earth you know that there's a problem).
most megafauna is somewhere on the endangered scale (least concern to extinct).

I don't know much about this, but as I see it this mixing up of species around the entire globe isn't THAT big of a deal.
Some species will get extinct and it will cause some imbalances in the ecosystem. But over a long term view the other animals will adapt and there is a new balance.
Will just take some time.

And it can only happen once, because once everything is mixed up there is nothing else to mix.

not sure I understand you. (there seems to be some words missing)
The introduction of diseases into aboriginal tribes wasn't a big thing either.

True.
I thought you were wondering why you should care about the animal going extinct.
Then again there are a lot of extinct or extremely endangered animals that we find awesome now (giant eagles, mammoths, moas, possibly giant ground sloths and sabre toothed cats and such), and our ancestors didn't. Do you want kids to find things like amphibians or bats or any big cats or whales or etc. (actually) awesome? It's just a matter of morals.
If you don't give a **** about anyone else then you shouldn't care.
You do know that we protect certain animals right.
and you do know that it's illegal to to take drugs right.
Look how well that's working. Laws are even harder to enforce if it's out in the wilderness.

Most animals we will destroy we will do so indirectly via environmental destruction.

  • Varine Varine:
I want to build a filtration system for my 3d printer, and that shit is so much more complicated than I thought it would be
  • Varine Varine:
Apparently ABS emits styrene particulates which can be like .2 micrometers, which idk if the VOC detectors I have can even catch that
  • Varine Varine:
Anyway I need to get some of those sensors and two air pressure sensors installed before an after the filters, which I need to figure out how to calculate the necessary pressure for and I have yet to find anything that tells me how to actually do that, just the cfm ratings
  • Varine Varine:
And then I have to set up an arduino board to read those sensors, which I also don't know very much about but I have a whole bunch of crash course things for that
  • Varine Varine:
These sensors are also a lot more than I thought they would be. Like 5 to 10 each, idk why but I assumed they would be like 2 dollars
  • Varine Varine:
Another issue I'm learning is that a lot of the air quality sensors don't work at very high ambient temperatures. I'm planning on heating this enclosure to like 60C or so, and that's the upper limit of their functionality
  • Varine Varine:
Although I don't know if I need to actually actively heat it or just let the plate and hotend bring the ambient temp to whatever it will, but even then I need to figure out an exfiltration for hot air. I think I kind of know what to do but it's still fucking confusing
  • The Helper The Helper:
Maybe you could find some of that information from AC tech - like how they detect freon and such
  • Varine Varine:
That's mostly what I've been looking at
  • Varine Varine:
I don't think I'm dealing with quite the same pressures though, at the very least its a significantly smaller system. For the time being I'm just going to put together a quick scrubby box though and hope it works good enough to not make my house toxic
  • Varine Varine:
I mean I don't use this enough to pose any significant danger I don't think, but I would still rather not be throwing styrene all over the air

I bitch about Xenforo sometimes but it really is full featured you just have to really know what you are doing to get the most out of it.
  • The Helper The Helper:
It is just not easy to fix styles and customize but it definitely can be done
  • The Helper The Helper:
I do know this - xenforo dropped the ball by not keeping the vbulletin reputation comments as a feature. The loss of the Reputation comments data when we switched to Xenforo really was the death knell for the site when it came to all the users that left. I know I missed it so much and I got way less interested in the site when that feature was gone and I run the site.
